Dig Deeper and Eli "Paperboy" Reed present: The Second Annual BROOKLYN SOUL FESTIVAL at the Bell House - 149 7th St, Brooklyn, NY October 8 & 9, 2010 Featuring: Barbara Lynn, Betty Harris, Vernon Garrett, Don Gardner, Harvey Scales, Renaldo Domino, Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves, and the Sweet Divines For two nights in 2009, well over 1000 people packed the Bell House in downtown Brooklyn to witness the first ever Brooklyn Soul Festival. Seven artists – veterans of the genre as well as talented young soul disciples – amazed an eclectic audience of local and international soul fans with a revue that recalled the Apollo Theater in its 1960s heyday and set Brooklyn music blogs abuzz for weeks. This October the Brooklyn Soul Festival returns to the Bell House with an incredible lineup – headlined by two legendary women of Gulf Coast soul and backed by two of the most in-demand bands in soul music today – that promises to outshine even last year’s stellar bill. The massive event also features a top-notch record fair, award-winning BBQ, and a slew of international soul DJs. The Second Annual Brooklyn Soul Festival is a joint presentation of two local movers-and-shakers of the Brooklyn scene – the team behind the highly acclaimed monthly live music series Dig Deeper and Capitol Records recording artist Eli “Paperboy” Reed. (Fri., 10/8) Betty Harris: Her astounding 1960s and 70s collaborations with soul impresario Allen Toussaint are a centerpiece of the recent soul revival and rightfully earned her the epithet “The True Queen of New Orleans Soul.” (Sat., 10/9) Vernon Garrett: His gospel roots are front-and-center on his sixties soul records, which have long been staples of UK Northern Soul DJ sets and are finally earning recognition in the U.S. This performance will mark Vernon’s long overdue debut in NYC. (Fri., 10/8) Harvey Scales: Though famous for penning the first ever platinum-selling single (Johnnie Taylor’s “Disco Lady”), soul aficionados know him for the gritty (and unbelievably funky) 45s he cut with his Milwaukee band, the Seven Sounds. (Sat., 10/9) Don Gardner: A giant of Philly soul. Every Friday and Saturday night you can be sure that, somewhere in the world, the iconic opening guitar riff of “My Baby Likes to Boogaloo” is prompting a Pavlovian rush to the dance floor. (Fri., 10/8) Renaldo Domino: His transcendent Chicago soul recordings are a highlight of the Numero Group’s acclaimed Eccentric Soul compilation series, and he has amazed audiences at his recent comeback shows with his dynamic performance style and flawlessly sweet vocals. (Sat., 10/9) Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves: The 26-year old Boston native is one of soul music’s brightest talents and most dedicated torchbearers. He and his extraordinarily energetic band will blast through a set of songs from his recent Capitol Records release Come and Get It and will also double as the backing band for Barbara Lynn, Vernon Garrett, and Don Gardner on Night 1 of the festival. (Fri., 10/8) The Sweet Divines: This quartet of young women has been killing Brooklyn audiences with their full-stops live show and catchy, new-but-old-sounding original tunes. With the Divine Soul Rhythm Band (their 7- piece band of Brooklyn soul all-stars), they will open Night 2 of the festival and put in overtime as the backing band for Betty Harris, Harvey Scales, and Renaldo Domino. (Sat., 10/9) RECORD FAIR INFO: Shakey's Record Fair was established in 2005 by New York City's turntable queen DJ Shakey and, with several fairs per year, has become the go-to event for DJs, producers, and lovers of all things hep and far-out. The fair has gained international acclaim and a reputation for providing a vinyl digging experience as smooth as Isaac Hayes' 1972 Peacock Blue, gold trimmed, two-door, Eldorado Cadillac. CATERER INFO: Fette Sau: Located in Williamsburg, Fette Sau is Brooklyn's premier BBQ joint and smokehouse. Their specialty -- dry rubbed meat sourced exclusively from organic and/or small farms -- won them Zagat's "Best BBQ" award in 2009 and 2010, as well as "Best Highway to Gout" in Time Out New York's 2008 Eat Out Awards. PRESENTER INFO: Dig Deeper: A team of two local DJs – DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson – have changed the face of Brooklyn nightlife with their live music series Dig Deeper, which features live performances by veteran soul musicians. Over the past two years, they have built up an enthusiastic and diverse following that flocks to Downtown Brooklyn for their monthly events. Eli “Paperboy” Reed: A Boston native and current Brooklyn resident, Eli Reed has been a devotee of soul, blues, and gospel for the entirety of his young life. His work as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist has taken him around the world and recently culminated in the release of his first major label release, Come and Get It on Capitol Records. For the second year in a row, Dig Deeper and Eli “Paperboy” Reed have teamed up to produce and curate the Brooklyn Soul Festival. They have been assisted in their work by Tambo Productions, the tireless creative team headed by J.B. Flatt and Jennie Wasserman of the Sweet Divines.
