While the dramatic St John Passion (heard earlier this season) focusses on the action, SUN 00:00 Geoffrey Smith's Jazz (b04gjzx7) Along with fellow Lancastrian composer Sir Peter Maxwell the St Matthew is altogether more contemplative - confronting Max Kaminsky and Muggsy Spanier Davies, Sir Harrison Birtwistle celebrates his 80th birthday this suffering and torture as well as salvation and redemption in year. The Proms marks the occasion with a concert from one of some of Bach's most moving music. Trumpeters Max Kaminsky (1908-1994) and Muggsy Spanier the UK's leading new music ensembles, the Birmingham (1901-1967) were brassmen of the old school, laying down a Contemporary Music Group. A starry line-up of soloists is led by Mark Padmore's Evangelist hot Dixieland lead with the likes of Eddie Condon and Sidney and German baritone Christian Gerhaher singing the words of Bechet.
