Proxim Confidential 12 FastConnect – SU Mobility FastConnect enables a mobile SU to preserve the established layer-2 connection to the backbone network when it moves away from the current BSU coverage area and enters into another BSU coverage area. SU Mobility is base on break before make technique SU loose connection with its current base before connecting to the new one Compared to mobility typically used in a cellular network which is referred to as a soft handoff or make before break. SU Mobility includes below steps to switch from one BSU to a second BSU. Scanning channels for new BSU’s (listening to ANNOUNCE messages) Select the best BSU from the list of found new BSUs Terminating the relationship with the current BSU Re-registering at the new (selected) BSU Transition time < 40 ms SU Mobility uses SNR values to determine when to switch © 2016 Proxim Wireless. Proxim Confidential 13 FastConnect - Procedures FastConnect supports 3 types of hand off procedures Slow Roaming This is triggered when SU has sufficient time to move to a better BSU, and the Slow roaming SNR threshold is greater than or equal to the current SNR. During this procedure, when SU is scanning for new BSU's, BSU and SU will buffer all the data till scanning period is finished. Fast Roaming This is triggered when SU's link is in the edge of the BSU's coverage area as determined by SNR. Emergency Roaming This is triggered when SU does not see any packets from the connected BSU for 1 second. © 2016 Proxim Wireless. All rights reserved. Proxim Confidential 14 FastConnect– BSU Coverage BSU coverage area can be split into three regions Fast Roaming Non-Roaming, Roaming and Undesired Threshold Regions are delimited by the roaming (FRT) thresholds (Slow and Fast) BSU coverage area depends on: BSU Slow Roaming Threshold Antenna type (SRT) Gain Orientation (Omni, Bow Tie, Pannel) Polarity (single or dual) Transmit power Line of Sight Expected throughput Throughput SRT FRT < 50 Mbps 25 dB 20 dB 50 – 100 Mbps 30/35 dB 25/30 dB > 100 Mbps 40 dB 35 dB © 2016 Proxim Wireless. Proxim Confidential 15 FastConnect – Network Design 1 Maximum Overlap Design This design has the maximum overlap region (less distance between adjacent BSUs) and less time is spent for scanning when compared to other designs. It is recommended if the primary goal is performance or the application cannot tolerate drop in throughput. In this design, Fast Roaming Threshold is not relevant. It can be used in Adjacent-channel configuration 5.650GHz 5.510GHz 5.650GHz SRT 1 SRT 2 BSU 1 BSU 2 BSU 3 100 % Throughput 0 % Time Roaming Direction © 2016 Proxim Wireless. All rights reserved. Proxim Confidential 16 FastConnect – Network Design 2 Minimum Overlap Design This design has less overlap region (more distance between adjacent BSUs) but more time is spent for scanning compared to other designs. It is recommended if the primary goal is to install fewer number of base stations and the application can tolerate a drop in throughput for longer duration. It can be used in Co-channel configuration 5.510GHz 5.510GHz 5.510GHz SRT 1 FRT 1 SRT 2 FRT 2 BSU 1 BSU 2 BSU 3 100 % Throughput 0 % Time Roaming Direction © 2016 Proxim Wireless. Proxim Confidential 17 FastConnect – Network Design 3 Typical Overlap Design Typical Network Design that is a trade off between other two designs in terms of performance and number of base stations. It can be used in both Adjacent 5.650GHz 5.510GHz 5.650GHz or Co-channel configuration 5.510GHz 5.510GHz 5.510GHz SRT 1 SRT 2 BSU 1 BSU 2 BSU 3 100 % Throughput 0 % Time Roaming Direction © 2016 Proxim Wireless.
