Ross, NCTE Director of Publications ix FOREWORD This second edition of ADVENTURING WITH BOOKS is intended to serve as a guide to any adultbe he teacher, layman, or librarian, or parentwho is interested in selecting books for children of preschool age through the eighth grade. Though such an undertaking may be overly ambitious, itcan hardly be faulted because there are literally thousandsupon thousands of books available for children in this age range. Obviously, some of these titles hold greater promise for young readers than do others. We have selected for inclusion in this bibliography books that we believe combine the qualities of entertaining reading with literary merit. Certainly the particu- lar combination of these two qualities will not be equal in every instance. Therefore, a simple arrangement of priorities has been established. To be included in this bibliography,a book must first have a high potential for reader involvmentor interest. Second, the book must have a degree of literary merit that raises it above others of its type. Selection in torms of these criteria, particularly the latter, is admittedly precarious. This is especially so when one recognizes that the most important element in determining the success of book selec- tion is the individual for whom the book is intended. So true is this fact that we, as a committee, can only offer this list with the confidence that you, the user, will apply your knowledge and understanding of italiddual .aders' interests, tastes, purposes, and reading abilities to the process of book selec- tion. Successful selection of books for young readers dependsnot only upon one's knowledge of children in general andin particular but also in good part upon helping him becomeas comfortable in rejecting a suggested book as he is inaccepting one. Remember that the more reluctant a child is to accept adult suggestions, the more apt he is to have had previous experiences with adults who have made it difficult for himto reject suggested books without appearing to also reject the adult who has made the suggestions. Book selection fails when it becomes a matter of an adult forcing his choiceupon a young reader. Rejection of suggested books ought to beno more than an invitation to the adult to involve the reader more, to know him better, to help him feel more confident, and to continue the search for books that will prove appealing to that particular reader. This present edition has more than 2,400 entries. Of necessi- ty, most of them are about books of recent publication, but many older titles have been included for the user's considera- tion. Out-of-print titles are not included. The table of contents shows how the books have been categorized for annotation. The numbers concludingeach bibliographic entry indicate the age range for which that book is apt to be most appropriate. Titles thatwere available in paperback at the time this bibliography was preparedare so indicated by the letter P, and the publisher is noted ifthere is only one edition. When the cost is of special importance, the user should remember that book prices change rapidly and that it would be wise to consult the individual publisher's most current catalog. Prices have been verified as of Spring 1972. A final word.. .. It is the hope of this committee that the adults who use ADVENTURING WITH BOOKS will findit to be a most helpful tool in bringing to fruitionone of the greatest of all adventuresthat of bringing children and booksto- gether.
