Enschede Enschede is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands in the province of Overijssel. The city lies a few kilometres from Germany. Enschede is well known as a textile city. Until 1800 Enschede was not really a remarkable city, but in the years after that Enschede became the biggest centre of the textile industry in the Netherlands. At the Oude Markt (a market square in the middle of the centre of Enschede) you can see and visit the Grote Kerk. It was built in the Middle Ages, but got renovated in the 19th Century. The Oude Markt is also where you can find shops, cafés and is also thé place to be for De Oude Markt, Enschede the Enschede nightlife. When you turn around (;-)), you can see the Sint Jacobuskerk. It was built in 1932-1933. Other interesting cultural things to visit or see when you’re in Enschede, are: Rijksmuseum Twenthe: this museum was founded in 1927, by textile industry Baron Jan Bernard van Heek. It is a national museum because Van Heek donated his own private collection and the museum building De Oude Markt, Enschede to the Dutch government. The Lonneker Molen The Elderinkshuis And the Alphatoren A famous event that takes place in Enschede every year is the Batavierenrace. The Batavierenrace is noted in Guinness Book of Records as world’s longest relay race. After the Batavierenrace the biggest student party of Europe is held at the University of Twente. Also, the Marathon of Enschede (held every year) is Sint Jacobuskerk, Enschede the second oldest marathon of Europe. .
