Heller, who was hired on August 14, 2009, as the 28th head coach in 115-year history of the program, directed the Sycamores to a 10-10 record in conference action, good for a tie for third place. The Sycamores also picked up a pair of wins in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, eliminating the Creighton Bluejays from the tournament with their second win. ISU exceeded the expectations of those from the conference last season, as the Sycamores were picked to finish in sixth place during the preseason vote. This season, the Sycamores were chosen fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll, as ISU returns 13 letterwinners overall, including four position starters and six pitchers from the 2010 squad. “I think it’s a fair pick and honestly a pick that shows some respect considering our losses,” said head coach Heller. “To be picked fourth with no preseason all-conference selections shows some respect for the program. I feel like this is a year where the league is balanced from first to last. Illinois State returns a good group but after that everyone will be very similar. It will be a battle every weekend.” On the offensive side, the Sycamores will have to fill the shoes of five position start- ers, in: Ryan Strausborger (.344, 83 hits, 41 stolen bases), Luke Fieser (.362, 79 hits, 42 RBI), Ben Ferrell (.303, 37 RBI, 161 fielding assists), Grant Grgurich (.295, 39 hits, two triples) and Tyler Graham (.287, 50 hits, 11 stolen bases). ISU welcomes back four starters, in: senior outfielder Levi Ferguson (.298, 31 hits, 21 RBI), junior out- fielder Kyle Burnam (.340, 73 hits, 33 walks), sophomore catcher Jeremy Lucas (.326, 57 hits, 13 doubles) and sophomore utility player Robby Ort (.353, five home runs, 50 RBI). Lucas was named to the Second Team All-MVC last season, while both Burnam and Ort earned honorable mention status. Sophomore Robby Ort “At first base we have a great option with both a right-handed and left-handed hitter,” said head coach Heller. “Junior transfer Jon Hedges is a big, strong right-handed power hitter that put up big numbers in his time at Olney College, but is also a strong defender. We return sophomore Jake Hartley, who played a lot in the last half of the season last year. Jake will fight for playing time at both first base and designated hit- ter, and is another left-handed bat with power that we could put into the lineup. “We have a lot of talent at third base, with redshirt sophomore Koby Kraemer and ju- nior transfer Ryan Walterhouse sitting as the frontrunners at the moment,” said head coach Heller. “Koby can play all three infield spots and is solid defensively at all three, which gives us a lot of options in how to us him. Koby’s got a chance to be one of the top offensive players on the team this season. Ryan is also solid defensively and can play third, first or left field if needed. Ryan’s a power hitter like Jon Hedges that will have an impact on the lineup. Redshirt freshman Jacob Weinzapfel is also a solid op- tion at third base for us heading into the season. “At shortstop, sophomore Jordan Pearson will be the everyday guy as we head into the season,” said head
