Exposé Touring exhibition Bauhaus 100 Touring exhibition Bauhaus 100 We are celebrating 100 years of the Bauhaus with the touring exhibition Bauhaus 100! This exhibition documents an important and interesting epoch in the history of modern furniture: the development of tubular steel furniture and, thereby, the invention of the cantilever chair in the 1920s/1930s. Bauhaus teachers and designers influenced by the Bauhaus experimented with the new material and realised clear and straightforward designs with it. From the beginning, Thonet was a partner and took over the production and sales of the various models. Many of them are still part of our portfolio today, and all of them are considered classics of furniture history. The importance of Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Mart Stam for the Bauhaus is undisputed. Their furniture designs are popular highlights in the Thonet portfolio to this day. The classic tubular steel cantilever chairs (also described as chairs without back legs) are part of modern design history: They comprise chairs S 33 and S 43 by Mart Stam, the wicker cane models S 32 and S 64 by Marcel Breuer, his lounge chair S 35, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s S 533 with the elegant tubular steel arc. The desk S 285 and the nested tables B9, which are almost unsurpassable in their simplicity and elegance, also represent the New Objectivity, which had become popular at the time. We once again place the furniture, which perfectly unites functionality, comfort, quality, and timeless aesthetics, in the spotlight at the occasion of the Bauhaus anniversary with the touring exhibition. The exhibition is an excellently fit installation for showrooms of specialist trade partners, for design centres, and for galleries.
