In 2017, the National Book Trust, India celebrated 60 years of its foundation. Besides, panel discussions and special book fairs that were organised across the country, the Trust also organised a two- day seminar titled ‘Bhartiya Sahitya Mein Rashtriyata Ka Bodh.’ Some of the new outreach programmes initiated as part of 60 years celebrations, includes Panchayat and Sanskrit book fairs, publishing courses for girl students, and collaboration with Indian Public Library Movement for book promotion through libraries. Under these initiatives, the first Sanskrit Book Fair was held at Varanasi from 9 to 17 September 2017 and the first Rashtriya Panchayat Book Fair was organised at Srinagar, Uttarakhand from 24 to 28 February 2018. Under the Mahila Lekhan Protsahan Yojna, three titles in Hindi, namely Ya Se Yashaswini Ya Se Yatra, authored by Ms Yashaswini Pande; Johadi, authored by Ms Kaushal Panwar and Rani Kamlapati authored by Ms Indira Dangi were published and were launched during New Delhi World Book Fair, 2018. As part of its endeavour to promote books in Sanskrit, the Trust published the book Charaiveti Charaiveti, authored by Shri Ram Naik, Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh; and Gandhi-Tattva- Shatakam, authored by Shri M V Nadkarni. 31020_ENGLISH_Anual Report_2018.indb 5 09-01-2019 19:53:21 6 ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018 In its objectives to reach books to the underprivileged children, the NBT in association with Snapdeal initiated the project of Har Haath Ek Kitaab, where individuals were encouraged to donate books for the underprivileged children. Publishing Publishing forms a major activity of the Trust. It publishes a wide variety of reasonably priced quality books ranging from works of fiction to books on Medical Sciences and cutting edge technology for all segments of the society and for all age groups, including a wide variety of illustrated books for children. Over the years, the Trust’s determined efforts in developing a strong and inclusive policy towards publishing is also apparent in the variety of books published for visually handicapped and the neo-literates. The Trust publishes books in all major Indian languages, which includes Asamiya, Bangla, Bodo, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Manipuri, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. In addition to this, the Trust has also published books in Ao Naga, Bhojpuri, Bhili, Bhatri, Halbi, Himachali, Kokborok, Khasi, Garo, Lepcha, Bhutia, Mising, Limboo, Mizo, Newari, Maghi, Tibetan among others. During the period under review, 1168 titles were published by the Trust. These included 68 originals, 65 translations, 1030 reprints and 5 revised editions. Book Promotion Activities The Trust organises Book Fairs/ Exhibitions throughout the country. The NBT is the organiser of the prestigious annual New Delhi World Book Fair. NBT has so far organised 26 New Delhi World Book Fairs, 41 National Book Fairs and more than 240 Regional Books Fairs. Book Fairs in India During the period from April 2017 to March 2018, the Trust organised 10 Book Fairs across the country including Amritsar Book Fair (22 – 30 April 2017), Shimla Book Fair (13 – 21 May 2017), Tiruvannamalai Book Fair (18 – 27 August 2017), Dehradun Book Fair (28 August to 5 September 2017), National Sanskrit Book Fair (9 – 17 September 2017), Tirunelveli Book Fair (3 – 11 February 2018), Brahmaputra Literary Festival (9 – 11 February 2018), Gaya Book Fair (10 – 18 February 2018), National Panchayat Book Fair, Srinagar, Uttarakhand (24 – 28 February 2018), and Agra Book Fair (10 – 18 March 2018). 31020_ENGLISH_Anual Report_2018.indb 6 09-01-2019 19:53:21 ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018 7 The Trust also stepped-up its book promotional activities in the Northeast through a number of Book Fairs, literary activities and special sales drive. During the year under review, the Trust organised the second edition of the Brahmaputra Literary Festival and a Bodo language translation workshop in which around 23 children’s books published by the Trust were translated into Bodo language. The books have since been published. The Trust has also broadened its activities in Jammu & Kashmir to create book-mindedness and make NBT books available to the people in the valley. During the year under review, the Trust organised a seminar on ‘Status of Children’s Literature in Kashmiri Language,’ and a storytelling session among others. International Book Fairs In order to promote Indian publishing abroad, the Trust participates in various International Books Fairs by displaying a cross section of representative Indian publications brought out by various Indian publishers. Since 1970, the Trust has participated in more than 375 International Book Fairs. During the period under review, the Trust participated in 13 such International Book Fairs, including Bologna Children’s Book Fair (3 – 6 April 2017), Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (26 April to 2 May 2017), Tehran International Book Fair (3 – 13 May 2017), Asian Festival of Children’s Content, Singapore (17 – 21 May 2017), Nepal International Book Fair (10 – 16 August 2017), Beijing International Book Fair (23 – 27 August 2017), Indonesia International Book Fair (6 – 10 September 2017), Colombo International Book Fair (15 – 24 September 2017), Frankfurt Book Fair (11 – 16 October 2017), Sharjah International Book Fair (1 – 11 November 2017), Guadalajara International Book Fair (25 November – 2 December 2017), Cairo International Book Fair (27 January – 10 February 2018) and Bologna Children’s Book Fair (26 – 29 March 2018). Mobile Exhibitions The Trust has been trying to make the books available to the people at their doorsteps through mobile exhibitions. So far it has organised more than 16000 Mobile Exhibitions throughout the country including the Northeastern states. During the period under report, the Trust organised Mobile Book Exhibitions at about 677 places in and around Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi/NCR, Gujarat, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. 31020_ENGLISH_Anual Report_2018.indb 7 09-01-2019 19:53:21 8 ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018 Financial Assistance Programmes The Ministry of Human Resource Development had entrusted the scheme of Financial Assistance to Voluntary/Private organisations for organising Seminars/Training Courses/ Workshops/Annual Conventions/Book Fairs related to the Book Promotional Activities to the Trust. A number of organisations had applied for financial assistance for organising various Book Promotional Activities. Grants were released to 67 organisations during 2017-18 by the Trust to meet 75% of the approved expenditure of such Book Fairs, Seminars, etc. Besides, the Trust also provides assistance to authors and publishers for the publication of reasonably priced university level text and reference books and for books on Medical Science under its Subsidy Scheme. Literary Activities The Trust organises several book-related activities for the development of the publishing industry of the country. It organises workshops and seminars for those involved in the development, production and distribution of books. It also organises author’s meet and other literary activities such as book release functions from time to time. During the period under review, over 150 activities were organised by the Trust. National Centre for Children’s Literature (NCCL) The Trust also has a National Centre for Children’s Literature (NCCL), which is the nodal agency to monitor, coordinate, plan and aid the publication of children’s literature in various Indian languages. The NCCL has developed a library-cum-documentation centre of children’s literature. It organises workshops, seminars and exhibitions to develop the children’s literature of the country. With a view to promote and develop the reading habit of the children at the school level, the NCCL encourages setting up of Readers’ Clubs at the schools
