BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR This is the time of year when a lot of residents are leaving for the summer to beat the heat. Unfortunately, the world keeps revolving when they are gone. The Splash Newspaper is delivered monthly, phone books are delivered periodically, etc. If left lying in the driveway, this is a sure sign to anyone passing by that the residents are probably gone. I am instructing our Patrol Officers to stop if they notice any items lying in a driveway for more than a day and place them out of sight. Unfortunately, we have other duties and cannot get them all. I ask that we all be a “Good Neighbor.” If you see an accumulation of any items on any driveway, whether they are your neighbors or if you are just out for a walk, please move them out of sight by putting them behind a wall so they are not visible to passersby. Thank you all for your help and cooperation. GOING AWAY FOR THE SUMMER If you are going to visit friends, relatives, etc. for a short period of time or if you are leaving for the entire summer, you should fill out a Vacation Watch Form. This form is available on our website, www.cottonwoodpaloverde.com. You can also pick one up at Homeowner Services. This information is vitally important because if an emergency occurs on your property, Patrol can reach you or your assigned caretaker. This information is used strictly by our Patrol who will make periodic checks on your property while you are away. When you return, please remember to call Patrol at 895-9277 to cancel this service. If you are going to be in residence in another location, please fill out a Homeowner Account Information Form available at Homeowner Services or downloadable from our website www.cottonwoodpaloverde.com. List the dates you will be at the other location and let us know if this absence recurs every year and during what time frame. The information will be entered into our computer system and your mail from the Association will automatically be addressed to your alternate address during the time frame indicated by you. If you have any questions, contact Homeowner Services at 895-9606 or the Administration office 895- 3550. BIKING AND WALKING SAFETY Each year in the U.S., more than 65,000 pedestrians are injured and about 5,000 are killed by cars. This hasn’t yet happened in our community. We want to do all that we can to prevent such accidents. We don’t have sidewalks, so a few precautions for walkers and bikers are important, especially this time of year when more walkers are out in the early morning hours, enjoying their exercise before it gets too warm. Walk facing traffic. Do all that you can to be seen by drivers. Wear light colored clothing and something reflective. In the dark, carry and wave a flashlight as you walk. Try to make eye contact with oncoming drivers. If walking your dog, keep your pet on a short leash, wearing a reflective collar or leash. Most importantly, walk close to the curb, NOT in the automobile traffic lane. Bike with traffic. At night, be sure your bike has a light and reflectors, especially on the back. Wear light colored clothing. Be extra aware of traffic approaching you from behind. Install a mirror. Bike close to the curb, NOT in the automobile traffic lane. Be sure to have identification with you and carry your cell phone. DRIVERS, please be extra alert during the dark hours and drive SLOWLY. The Flyer Fitness Activity Center Page 3 FITNESS ACTIVITY CENTER Monday-Friday 6:00am-7:00pm; Saturday-Sunday 6:00am-6:00pm FITNESS FACT Resistance Training – How Do Muscles Work? If you have a basic understanding of how muscles work to move our bodies, then the training information that will follow in future articles will make more sense. So, let’s begin with a brief, non-scientific description of how muscles cause or control movement. In general, muscles do the following: Muscles can only pull - muscles cannot push. Muscles normally attach to bones through their tendons. Muscles cross over the joints (where 2 bones meet) of the body. When you want to move, the brain sends signals through the nerves to the muscles that cross the joints that you want to move. The involved muscle(s) do the following: Shorten (contract) to cause movement - when muscles shorten they pull at each end, towards their center, to cause movement. Lengthen to: Allow movement – example: when the bicep shortens to make the elbow joint bend, the tricep muscle (which is on the opposite side of the elbow joint) must relax and lengthen to allow the elbow joint to easily bend. If the tricep does not relax, it would be more difficult for the bicep to bend the elbow. Control movement – example: the bicep must shorten to bend the elbow AND it must slightly relax that contraction force in order to lengthen (with tension) and control the elbow joint as it straightens to finish the exercise repetition. Example: When performing an Arm Curl exercise and you are holding a dumbbell (the force of gravity is pulling the dumbbell down), the bicep would have to work harder to bend the elbow joint (cause movement) and to straighten the elbow joint slowly (control the movement). During an Arm Curl, the tricep muscle does the same thing with or without the dumbbell – it relaxes and lengthens to let the elbow joint bend and it returns to resting length when the elbow joint straightens. There is much more that actually happens during the movement process, but the information above provides some basic, general information that is important for understanding how we move. The next article will describe some of the different types of muscle conditioning that we all should be doing. FAC INFORMATION The CWPV FAC will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 4th. Masks are no longer required in the Fitness Center But anyone is welcome to continue wearing a mask, if they want. Please Wipe Down Fitness Equipment Even though the mask mandate is no longer in effect, normal fitness center etiquette requires that people should still wipe down any equipment they use – both before and after use. This was normal for any fitness operation even before the COVID pandemic. Locker Rooms, Saunas and Jacuzzis are Open For safety reasons and everyone’s comfort, please observe and follow all the FAC rules and policies when using the locker rooms, saunas and Jacuzzi. Thank you!
