Sciabarra Elizabeth A. Sciabarra Chief Executive Officer, Student Enrollment Joel I. Klein Chancellor Directory cover designed by Leonor Duran Art teacher: Sarah Holden School: PS 116, Elizabeth L. Farrell, Brooklyn Principal: Seiw Kong 3 Welcome to the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Process Introduction Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) programs provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is used as a springboard to learn skills that are necessary for success in school. In pre-Kindergarten, children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. All UPK programs are free of charge. Programs can be half-day or full-day. What's Included in the Pre-Kindergarten Directory? Before you begin the New York City Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) application process, we encourage you to review this directory. It includes information about eligibility, admissions priorities, key dates and the application and registration process for both public school UPK and Community Based-Organization (CBO) UPK programs. CBOs are private pre- school centers that partner with the City to provide half-day UPK programs for families. Public School UPK Programs Each public school UPK program listed in this directory includes the school's DBN (School Code), the school name, address and phone number. In addition, each public school listed has information on the total number of applicants and seats from the Round 1 2010 pre-Kindergarten admissions process. These data are provided to help you better understand how parents/guardians made their choices during Round 1 this year. The directory also provides the number of available seats for Round 2 in each public school program (AM, PM, Full-Day) for the 2010-2011 school year. Community-Based Organization UPK Programs For each CBO UPK program listed in this directory, we have included the district where the program is located, as well as the school name, address and contact information. CBO UPK programs require a separate application not provided in this directory. If you are interested in a CBO program, you should contact those programs directly. Students with Special Needs If your child currently has an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for related services and/or Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) services, and you want your child to apply for a New York City public school pre-Kindergarten program with services for the 2010-2011 school year, you may use the online application or the application in this directory. If your child has an IEP that specifies Special Class or Special Class in an Integrated Setting and you want your child to receive this service in a NYC pre-Kindergarten program during the 2010-2011 school year, do not use the application in this directory. Please contact the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) administrator at the Committee on Special Education (CSE) in your borough of residence. For more information, please visit the following website: www.nyc.gov/schools/Academics/SpecialEducation/Committees. Timeline Below are key dates for the Round 2 pre-Kindergarten admissions process. Event 2010 Date(s) Directories and Applications Available July 19 Application Deadline July 30 Offer Letters Mailed to Families End of August Families Pre-Register at Schools September 8 – 17 4 Choosing a School Do the Research Before you begin completing the application, review this directory and become familiar with the available public school UPK programs. Take the time to gather as much information as possible. Consider a school’s location. Remember, there is no transportation provided by the Department of Education (DOE) for pre-Kindergarten students. Consider the length and times of programs. There are morning programs (AM), afternoon programs (PM) and full-day programs (FD). You should decide whether or not your child is ready for a full-day program. Visit the DOE website at www.nyc.gov/schools/PreK to find more information about schools with UPK programs. Visit an enrollment office to meet with a counselor. Call an Early Childhood Borough Director for information about pre-Kindergarten instructional services (see page 8). Discuss your options with family, friends and neighbors. There are two ways to complete the pre-Kindergarten application, you can submit a paper application or you can apply online. The applications are the same and you should only submit one application. Applications must be submitted online or mailed on or before Friday, July 30, 2010. Late applications will not be processed. The online application is available at www.nyc.gov/schools/PreK. If you complete the online application, you will be able to generate an application receipt immediately. Families that do not have a computer at home may complete an application on a computer at one of the many New York City public library locations. Access to computers is available with a free library card. To sign-up for a library card, you must provide proof of address. Call 311 or visit one of the websites below to find a library in your area: Bronx: http://www.nypl.org/hours/index.cfm?Trg=6#bronx Brooklyn: http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/branch_libraries.jsp Manhattan: http://www.nypl.org/hours/index.cfm?Trg=6#manhattan Queens: http://www.queenslibrary.org/index.aspx?section_id=12&page_id=303 Staten Island: http://www.nypl.org/hours/index.cfm?Trg=6#staten If you do not apply online, you can complete the paper application and mail it in the reply envelope. An application receipt postcard will be sent to you to confirm receipt of the application. You must mail your application with the enclosed Business Reply Envelope or a regular-stamped envelope; do not send your application through Certified Mail, Returned Receipt, etc. or your application may not be received by the application deadline. Helpful Hints Before you submit your application, review the following hints: Your address must be filled out completely including apartment number if applicable (do not use abbreviations). If you are applying for more than one child for pre-Kindergarten in September 2010 (for example twins or triplets), and you want all of your children to attend the same school, then you must complete the application listing all of the children who are applying for pre-kindergarten If you want your child to attend his or her older sibling’s school, then you must list the older sibling’s school on the application. If you most prefer that your pre-Kindergarten child attend the same school as an older sibling, you must list the sibling’s school as your first choice. List only those schools you are interested in having your child attend. If your child is offered a placement, it will be to one of the schools that you rank on the application.
