As she is from Liverpool, she had only experienced the “KOP” and Premiership football, so I wanted to show her what real football was like. We lost. We lost 4-0. We were lucky to get nil. The Swansea crowd shouted “Olé” every time Kidderminster passed the ball. It was embarrassing. “Is it always like this?” my wife asked. “No” I replied. I remembered watching Swansea go from the old fourth division to the first. I remembered beating Leeds United 5-1 in our first game. Just over seven years later and Swansea City beat Arsenal 3-2 in the Premiership. We are now called Swansealona! What happened? A Chairman decided that Swansea City would play football as it should be played. Managers may come and go, but they would stick with their beliefs and play. This took courage and strength of character. There was derision from other clubs and they were favourites to be relegated, but they stuck to their beliefs. As an Academy we strongly believe in teaching the right way. Education is not just about passing examinations. It is about developing the person for their future. Giving them the courage to take risks, the confidence to realise that they can cope with success or failure, the ability to recognise that we all have strengths and weaknesses and we all need support sometimes, and that the only thing stopping you achieving your ambition is yourself. It is not the easy way, and sometimes we will not get it perfectly correct, but it is the right way. We may get criticised. We may get told that we will not be successful. It does not matter. We will be successful and we will be recognised as being an establishment that students enjoy going to and one which allows them to develop their full potential. A Premier establishment for the people of Tamworth.
