Terwada, Tharll. Virpur, Deodar and Varabi and the old thana9 of Varahi, Santalpllr, Deodar (including Suigam sub-thana). and Kankrej. L",ter Varahi and Santalpur states and thanas were trans erred to MtlhRana dhtrict., and Abn district aod Abu Road and Dilwara tehsils of. the former Sir.>hi state were added to this district. The district had a 19tH population of 74S, 796 and an area of 4394, 6 square miles. according to the area figure furnished by the Surveyor General of India. This Handbook' contains tables for Banaskantba district. compiled after the. 1951 Oensus of India. The main results of the 1951 Census are embodied in trle State TablEl::l published for the States of Bombay, Saurashtra aud Kutch. In this Handbook, the data are exhibited in greater detail. The numbers given to tables in this puhlication correspond to those given in the State Census Report. The fullowing tables for the district have, however, not been included in this HI\IIdhook. :- A-I: Val'iation in population dnring fifty years. III the case of the O-series of tabl~s. except C-I. the data were extracted Oil the hasis of a sample count of approximately 10% of the census slips, iustead of a full connt of all the slips. The C-I tahle was prepared from a four per cent sample of the households recorded in the National Register of Citizens relating to each town or village. In 1941, the popUlation figures were exhibited according to communitie.s in the "Village Handbooks" publishtld ~y the Government of Bombay. In 1951, the basis of classification at the Census, was changed from a social to an economic one, and tl)l> figures for villages given in tbe Primary Cens11s Abstracts and in . tables A-V. B·I. B-lI, O-II and E are according to the following eight Livelihood Clus€'tl:- Agricultural Classes I Cultivators of Jand, wholly or maillly owned; and their dependants. 11 Cultivators of land, whlllly Or mainly uuowned; and tbeir dependants. 111 Cultivating labourers: and their dependants. IV Non -cuiti vating owners of land; agricultural rent receivenl; and their dependant~. Noa-AlPieultural C...... Depen~ants. whether earning or non-earning', were classified at the ~ensus according to the principal means of livelihood of th~ persons on whom they were dependdnt. The Primary Census Abstracts, which contain basic information in respect of every village and town, have been arranged according to talukas and petas units into which every district is divided for administrative purposes. Tbe taluka was, however, too small a 'unit to adopt for preparing the main census tables. Therefore, in the B, C and D-series of tables figures have beeR given for tract:. and not for taiukas and petas. , Before sorting the census slips and tabulating the results, tracts were formed by combining the rural and urban areas of two or more talukas or petas. The' tracts into which· Banaskantha district was divided for this purpose are shown below:- Rural Tracts (1) Rural areas of Palanpur, Deesa and Dhanera talukas. (2) Rural areas of Dant~ and Abu Road ~alukas and Vadgam Peta. (3) Rural areas of Tharad? Wav, Deodar and Kankrej talukas. Urban Tracts (1) Urban area, of Tharad, Deesa, Palanpu~ and Abu Road taluk~. I Urban areas comprise the towns sh~wn in taple A-V. Shortly before the 1951 population census, a census of Small Industries was taken, and the res:ults I()f this census are given. in the table called .. Small Scale Industries Censu$-Employment in Establishments", included in this Handb~ok, The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home Industries and small workshops. The larger establishments, that is, power.using establishments with 10 or more workers and non-poWer using e.stablishments with 20 or more workers, were excluded from the scope of the enquiry as they now submit returns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on their own and not employing other people, except when looms were used. Otherwise the concept was of an enquiry which embraced all forms of associate activity where articles were produced, repaired or otherwise treated for sale, use or disposal.
