Last season saw many highs on the rugby field including Old Albanian RFC securing promotion to National 1, the Stags (U20s) reaching the national semi-final and the 1st XV winning the County Championship for the first time in our history. More on these great achievements later. The organisers of our various County competitions should be congratulated on getting them all completed during the horrendous weather that we endured in April. Congratulations to the successful clubs in the senior competitions and in all age groups. The amount of competitive rugby now played in Hertfordshire has grown exponentially over the last few years, involving huge commitment from many volunteers across the County all working to a tight budget. Please accept our grateful thanks. Mark Elliott - President The County Representative sides at all age groups for both boys and girls have performed Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union admirably and if you get the opportunity this season to watch any of our County junior sides play, I would thoroughly recommend that you do so - you will witness a very high standard of rugby. In addition, schools rugby competitions and the Returning Students Festival, run by Harry Harrison and Sam Carpenter respectively, are well supported and add further to the numbers participating in our great sport. I was fortunate to watch Old Albanian RFC on a few occasions last season and they always played an open and exciting brand of rugby, mixing breath-taking attack with extremely well organised defence. Their promotion to National 1 as winners of National 2 South is richly deserved and we offer them our best wishes for another successful season. The County Stags (U20s) had a late change of coaching personnel with Peter Engledow, ably assisted by James Coles and Marcus Cattell, stepping into the breach at short notice. After a narrow defeat against Sussex, the Stags went on to sweep all before them and win the Jason Leonard Cup as London & South East Division Champions. This meant a very tough trip to Hull to face perennial U20 finalists Yorkshire. Despite a heavy defeat, our young side managed to score four tries and 30 points against a side that went on to win the competition and we should be very proud of their achievements. When the 1st XV won the County Shield in 2005, I felt that this was probably as far as a small county such as Hertfordshire was likely to get. How wrong could I be?! In 2010-11 we reached the final at Twickenham, but in all honesty were beaten fairly comfortably by Lancashire. Last season with a stronger side and more experience of the big stage, we surprised everybody except ourselves by defeating mighty Lancashire in a thrilling final at Twickenham. There will no doubt be more on this great occasion in this publication, but it was a day that anyone from Hertfordshire who was present will never forget.
