I Summer 2007 I LSE Magazine I 3 Second term for the Director Howard Davies is to continue as LSE director until 2013. At its meeting on 6 March 2007, the LSE Council decided to offer Howard Davies a second term of office as director of LSE to run from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2013. He accepted. He said: ‘In comparison with many other British universities, LSE is in a strong position but there is a lot more to do. I enjoy the job, like the people here and am proud to be associated with such a great institution.’ Chairman of Court and Council Lord Grabiner said: ‘Since joining LSE as director in October 2003, Howard Davies has brought significant intellectual, financial and managerial skills to the role, which are exactly what we require.’ Malaysia donation The prime minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi (pictured), visited LSE in January for a donation of £50,000 to install a Malaysia Room in the New Academic Building. 4 Howard Davies received the cheque from the president of the LSE Alumni Society of Malaysia, Dato Dr Munir Majid (BSc Economics 1971 and PhD International Relations 1978). More than 90 Malaysian students, including representatives from the Committee of the LSE Malaysian-Singapore Society and the LSE Malaysian Club, attended the ceremony. Howard Davies said: ‘I am delighted that there will be a room in our new building named to mark the longstanding links between Malaysia and LSE. We are most grateful to all those who have contributed.’ (See page 38). 7 Professor Paul Kennedy joins School Professor Paul Kennedy will be the first holder of the Philippe Roman Chair in History and International Affairs at the School. Professor Kennedy is currently the J Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University, where he teaches on political, economic, and strategic issues. He is one of the most well known international historians working in the field today, and has reached a global audience through his books The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers (1987) and Preparing for the Twenty-First Century (1993). His latest, The 8 Parliament of Man: the past, present and future of the United Nations (2006), is inspired by the work he did on a report for MICHAEL MARSLAND /YALE UNIVERSITY MICHAEL MARSLAND /YALE the secretary general for the 50th anniversary of the UN. He was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2000 for services to history and elected a fellow of the British Academy in 2003.
