Issue No. 233 Hill & Valley THE PARISH MAGAZINE OF HURSTBOURNE PRIORS, LONGPARISH, ST MARY BOURNE & WOODCOTT 50p November 2019 Remembrance Sunday - 10th November Hill & Valley Parish Magazine for Hurstbourne Priors, Longparish and St Mary Bourne & Woodcott November 2019 Dear Friends, If you’re anything like me then you might feel a little glum when you look out of your window on a November morning and see a dark grey sky and pouring rain. If you know you have to go out into the wet weather, things somehow can seem even worse. Perhaps it’s only natural that our mood often aligns with the weather. However, perhaps we might take a different approach. Maybe we allow ourselves to feel downhearted because we are only prepared to see things from our own point of view at any given moment. When we reflect that the land, soil, fields and gardens are receiving some much needed seasonal water, things don’t seem quite so negative. Similarly, when we consider how the rain is adding to the reservoir water supplies from which we will all benefit, things look better still. Finally, we might spare a thought for those for whom water is a scarce commodity. Then we might consider how fortunate we are to have dark grey, wet November mornings. The Bible tells us that Jesus uttered these very simple, yet profound words. ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. I’m sure he wasn’t intending to impart a slushy, sentimental message. On the contrary, if any of us is to ‘love our neighbour’ it requires each of us to look beyond ourselves to the needs of others. I’m sure we do this in a whole variety of ways. I won’t attempt a list here. Having said this, I think any community, whether it is a business, school, village or nation is likely to be stronger when all its members look beyond themselves in order to help those around them. Perhaps it just requires us to look at an issue or a situation from a different point of view. That isn’t to say we always have to agree, but maybe we can bring ourselves to a point where we are more understanding of the views of others. My word, isn’t this wet and grey November morning a joy to behold. (Where did I put that brolly?) Warmest regards to you all.
