The biennial event brought more than 3,000 visitors into the station to meet our radio and TV hosts and many PBS Kids characters, walk through our TV studios, learn how to access WXXI on their smart devices, catch a short film presented by the Little Theatre, and sneak a peek of Second Opinion’s new season. The Little’s Theatre 1 Restoration: The Little’s historic Theatre 1 reopened in October following significant renovations. The restoration included the installation of a remodeled stage, new theater seating that matches the original Art Deco style seats (with cup holders!), plus major technology improvements including an energy-efficient LED lighting system, new projection, and an upgraded sound system. Documentaries: Our TV production team brought us two amazing documentaries this year. The first was Wendell Castle: A Portrait, which provided a look into the life of the master furniture artist, designer, sculptor, and educator. The film premiered at the Memorial Art Gallery on September 5th and made its WXXI-TV debut two weeks later. The second was Dialogue in Metal, which captured the journey of Jesse James of West Coast Choppers fame and world-renowned metal artist Albert Paley as they collaborated to make two sculptures. It premiered at The Little with a Q&A with Jesse and Albert before two sold-out crowds in October. The film premiered on WXXI-TV in November, and will be made available to PBS stations across the country this spring. From trusted, balanced reporting to Classical 91.5’s local hosts and productions, from the great music your hear on WRUR-FM to our 24-hour radio reading services for people who are visually impaired, and from all we present on TV and at The Little, it has truly been a great year. This important work would not be possible without your support, and for that, we thank you. Warmest holiday wishes and all the best for the New Year! Best regards, Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI Q&A WITH A CORPORATE SPONSOR Since 1966, EAST HOUSE has been offering personalized care for people with mental health and substance disorders while advocating for the better understanding and acceptance of these issues in the community. Through housing and recovery support services, East House works to move individuals from illness to health. President and CEO Greg Soehner shares more. Q. What do you wish more people knew about mental health? Mental health is as important as physical health. Many people who are suffering do not try to access mental health treatment because of the stigma associated with the disease. The more we talk about mental illness and the possibility of recovery, the more people will pursue treatment. Q. What would you say is the greatest myth about mental illness and substance use disorders? Neither mental illness nor addiction is a choice. They are diseases of the brain, not a moral or character flaw. If you approach these disorders as what they are, diseases, then it disengages EVENTS the myths. Q. How has the opioid epidemic influenced the public’s perception of addiction? The opioid epidemic has reinforced what we know: social determinates, such as safe housing, & healthy food, and opportunities for education and employment are critical to recovery. This epidemic has also started a larger conversation about approaches to treatment. Waiting lists for detoxification and recovery services can be a barrier for someone struggling with addiction. Compiled with the fact that the profile of addiction is much more complicated than in past years with the complexity of available substances, there are no easy solutions. As a community, we must come together and demand our leaders to continue to fight for additional resources to help individuals dealing with this serious disease. Q. Advice for someone supporting a loved one that’s struggling? If you or a loved one is struggling, remember that you are not alone. There are many resources in our community to help you. If you are unsure where to begin, please call the East House Admissions Department at 585-238-4800. easthouse.org EastHouseNY EastHouse GREG SOEHNER NEWS EAST HOUSE PRESIDENT AND CEO To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected] LIDIA CELEBRATES AMERICA “A HEARTLAND HOLIDAY FEAST” TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV Join Award-winning chef Lidia Bastianich as she travels to the heartland of America, immersing herself in diverse cultures that provide inspiration HOLIDAY for the holidays.
