AT.O.L.291B RSPB Scottish News Help on Reserves Have you ever thought of staying on a reserve for a week or more, helping the warden with surveys, visitors, management work and so on. This could be a holiday with a difference, helping us as well as enjoying the birds in some marvellous part of Scotland. Possibilities are-Handa Island, Sutherland; Fetlar, Shetland; Insh Marshes, Speyside; Loch of Strathbeg, Aberdeenshire and elsewhere. Anyone interested please write to the address blow. Oil Poll ution 1979 started disastrously with the Esso Bernicia incident at Sullom Voe, which killed some 3,700 birds, closely followed by a series of further incidents in Shetland and Orkney during February and March which between them account for at least 3,300 more birds. After that things, merCifully, improved, although how much of this was due to the (slightly) better weather during the 'summer' remains to be seen. Please report any oiled birds or beaches seen to the number below. The con tinuing help and co-operation of all Beached Bird Surveyors and of SOTEAG in Shetland is gratefully acknowledged. R.S.P.B. Croups The RSPB have now 12 members' groups throughout Scotland. These groups have regular indoor meetings as well as outdoor excursions as far afield as Leighton Moss and the Fame Islands. Many of them also take part in active conservation work on RSPB reserves. If you are interested in joining your local group the branches are: Aberdeen, Ayrshire (North), Ayrshire (Central). Dumfries, Dundee, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hamilton, Helensburgh, Kirkcaldy and Moray & Nairn. New Films Hopefully "Scottish Birds" will reach you in time to go to the premieres of the new RSPB films. This is another superb selection on birds in towns, shelducks and a reserve in Wales. The dates are March 8th, 10th and 11th in the George Square Theatre, Edinburgh. Bates Beached birds at selected Orkney beaches 1976 - 8 P. HOPE JONES Oil in sUcks and blobs on the sea, in contrast to the refined variety in the petrol pumps, seems to have increased alarmingly in the last year. This survey was done at an early stage in oil developments in Orkney and so provides baseline data for assessing subsequent damage to birds. In 1975 only a few of Orkney's extensive beaches were being regularly covered for the national beached bird survey, and it was considered that an area with such substantial breed ing populations of seabirds should be better monitored, and throughout the year if possible. Additionally, it was felt that spillages at Occidental's oil terminal on Flotta could increase the amount of seaborne oil in Orkney waters, Scapa Flow in particular, leading to a concomitant increase in the frequency of oiled birds on beaches.
