Expressed on the surface of most nucleated cells, class I molecules are heterodimeric molecules and consist of a type I integral membrane \u03b1 heavy chain and soluble \u03b22 microglobulin protein. The extracellular region of the heavy chain further consists of three domains, one of which comprises the peptide binding groove. Antigens binding to class I molecules are 8\u201310 amino acids long and play an important role in recognition of the virus infected and malignant cells by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). In addition, class I molecules interact with NK cell receptors to modulate the activity of NK cells. Additional information: It displays negligible binding to Fc receptors.
