The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spani sh university town where St . Oidacus (i .e., Diego) spent much of his time . Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major bu siness, cultural , residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminal s. Navy, and White CONFERENCE Southern California Baseball Association DEPARTMENT SECRETARY Linda Dieter TELEPHONE INFORMATION (619)291 -6480, Ext 4272 JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach Beginning his 21st season as head coach of the University of San Diego baseball program, John Cunningham has guided the Toreros from a NCAA Di vi­ sion 11 power to one of the top programs in the Southern Califor­ nia Baseball Association (one of the best baseball conferences) and the NCAA Division I ranks. A native of San Diego, Cunning­ ham attended St. Augustine High School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiving AII-CIF honors in baseball and led the County in scoring during his senior year basketball season. Cunningham attended the 'University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making th e Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the National Jesuit Honor Society, " Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. Degree in Hi story as well as a general secondary credential. In basketball, John was named to the All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American teams. Baseball cornered him a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's " Athlete of the Year. " John began his career at USO in 1962, with 1981 seeing him win his 400th game. From 1969 through 1983, the Toreros have compiled eleven winning seasons out of fourteen. His teams have won thirty or more games five times, first in 1971; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981. Four of his teams have gone to post-season play­ offs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cun­ ningham was named Di strict 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Di vision I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place (14-12) finish in the SCBA. His 1980 Torero team finished the year at 30-25-1 (14-1 4 SCBA) and. in 1981 USO finished the year 30-15-1 and a fourth place finish in the Conference with a 15-12-1 record. 1982 was USD's first year under the .500 mark in SCBA action with a 13-15 record and a 29-24- 1 overall mark. Last season was the fi rst time since 1975 that the Toreros overall record was under .500 as th ey fin ished 17-27-1. Besides coaching baseball , John works for the National League of the Major League Baseball Association as the San Diego Padres of­ ficial scorer. He a lso works for the National Basketball Association as the San Diego Clippers official scoreboard operator. John and his wi fe Nancy we re married in May of 1978. He has a stepson, Geoffrey, age nine. John graduated with a degree in sociology from U.C. Santa Bar­ bara, where he played catcher for the Gauchos. He then received his Masters in Physical Edu­ ca tion from the University of the Pacific. After one year of semi­ pro ball, he spent a few years at various coaching assignments before becoming pitching coach for two seasons at San Diego State. He then spent four years at Mesa College as an assistant, before coming to USD. John and his wife Diane reside in San Diego with their three sons, Scott (11), Paul (8) , and Tim (5) MIKE SAVERINO Assistant Coach Coach Saverino will be in his 2nd year of coaching at USD, and it will be a short one at that. Mike will help coach the first half of the season before becoming player-coach for the California Angels minor league system later this spring. It will be Mike's fourth year as an infielder with the Angels and his second as a coach. Mike graduated from USD in 1980 with a degree in Behavioral Science. As a four year starter for USD, Mike holds five USD records and can be found in the top three of numerous Torero records. In 1980, Mike was MVP while bat­ ting .323 with 55 runs scored, 63 hits, 55 walks and 14 sacrifice hits. Mike is single and resides in San Diego. JOHN MULLEN Assistant Coach Coach Mullen will be in his 1st year of coaching at USD. John is currently enrolled in the USD Master's program for Business Administration. John was a four year player at USD and last year was the team's M.V.P. and an SCBA First Team member. While batting .351 for the year, John led the team in at bats (168), runs scored (34) , hits (59), and total bases (71 ). He batted .394 in SCBA action. His 19 game hitting streak in which he banged out a total of 38 hits is a new Torero record . He can be found among the top three in numerous single season and career records including hits (227) and triples (20).
