The White Heat Swing Orchestra

L ok UNIVERSITYOF NEWHAMPSHIRE OUR THIRTY-SECONDPROGRAM THE WHITEHEAT SWINGORCHESTRA DIRECTEDBY CRAIGBALL SPONSOREDBY THE DEPARTMENTOF MUSIC, AND THE NEW HAMPSHIRE LIBRARYOF TRADITIONALJAZZ 8 P.M.MONDAY DECEMBER3, 1984 STRAFFORDROOM MEMORIALUNION DURHAM,NEW HAMPSHIRE THE ARTISTS THE WHITE HEAT SWING ORCHESTRA Last fall we were privilegedto host the then nascenlWhile Heat Swing Orchestra, and our immediate responseto the successof its performancewas an invitationfor an early return which we enthusiaslicallyhonor tonight. As we shallsoon hear, since its firstvisit the band has developedin both repertoireand purpose, intensifying its devotionto imaginationas well as nostalgia,to creativityas much as revival. As is the case with so many collectivehuman endeavors,it is easyto oversimplitythe "big genesisof the so-called band'1lt is convenientand not whollywithout merit to describethe trumpet, reed, and trombonesections of the largerensemble as beingmore organized extensionsot the classibNew OrleansJront line, with the necessarywriting- down oJthe notesfor harmonicand rhythmicreasons growing into an arrangedor ulti- mately compositional approachto jazz. However, the truth in this hypothesismust be con- ditionedby the fact that similarlyinstrumentated bands, both blackand white, had been playing various types ol iazz-relaiedpopular music for years beforethe right mix of ele- ments coalescedinto swing. James ReeseEurope actually recordedbefore the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and at the time Louis Armstrong'stirst Hol Fivesides were cut, Sam Wbodingwas alreadya successin Germanywith an aggregationdescribed by Gunther "Harlem's Schulleras answerto PaulWhiteman"(!) By the late 1920'sthe ferment was intense. The varied rolesof leader, arrange( composer, sideman, and improvisingsoloist existed in everypossible combination, some of whichare yet to be unraveled, given the absenceof publlshedscores and recordingsof live pertor- mances. As tonight'sprogram will illustrate, names such as FletcherHenderson, his brotherHorace, Don Redman,Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford,Jimmy Mundy, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, etc., havemeant difterentthings to ditferentpeople at difterent times,in termsof both individualaccomplishments and complexinterrelationships. Becauseof the wide range of sourcesthey have so painstakinglyexplored, Craig Ball and his colleagueswill be bringingeven to the lessyoung of us much musicthat we havenever betore heard in actual performance, and in a few casesnot evenon commercial record- ings. And in the true spiritol the earlybig-band experience, original material now flows "head" from the band itself, as well as (or unwritten)arrangements, a type that has always generatedspontaneous excitement in groupswhich really have jelled. The orchestra now has its own recording available- (betterplace your order as the edi- tion is limited!)- and ironicallybut appropriatelythis will serveto furtherdemonstrate that the countless riches from those golden years need not remaintrozen in the shellacof a half-centuryago but can be givennew lifeby the musicallyserious and adventurousartist of the present. As we warmly welcome Craig Ball and the White Heat Swing Orchestra backto UNH,we rejoicein lhe inspirationthey havestimulated in listenersand performers alike.
