Billing Outline First Son John Who Married Margery Blewet and Settled at St Tudy in the 1540S

THE HERALD’S VISITATION OF 1620 FOCUSED SOLELY ON THE LINE OF JOHN BILLING / TRELAWDER’S 6 miles BILLING OUTLINE FIRST SON JOHN WHO MARRIED MARGERY BLEWET AND SETTLED AT ST TUDY IN THE 1540S. Summary of what is a rather large chart: BILLING update, December 2018. The rest of the family successfully finished their 1000 National Archives document R/5832 has a supposed date of 24 April 1512; but is This outline sets out the BILLING alias TRELAWDER family connections in Cornwall THIS LINE IS SHOWN HERE IN PURPLE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE AS SET OUT IN 1874 BY THE HARLEIAN piece jigsaw puzzle; but sadly we have not been so successful in joining together the many over two hundred years. It is unusual to see an alias - our modern equivalent being the SOCIETY AND USED BY SIR JOHN MACLEAN IN HIS RESEARCH. endorsed with a note by C.G.. Henderson “This deed was forged about 17 Eliz. [1577] hundreds of pieces that make up the BILLING alias TRELAWDER story. by Nicholas Beauchamp of Chiton (denounced by the Devon Jury)” hyphenated name - being sustained over so long a time. OTHER BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY STAYED IN ST MINVER AND IN THE ST BREOCK / EGLOSHAYLE AREA. ST TUDY LINE LEFT In many cases, no connections are attempted. At other times links have been suggested. THESE WERE NOT CHRONICLED, BUT WE MAY ASSUME THAT RICHARD, AT ST MINVER IN 1523, AND As mentioned earlier, the 1874 book on the Cornwall Visitations by the Harleian Society, The spelling of TRELAWDER does vary, sometimes TRELODER or TRELOTHER etc. WILLIAM BILLING ALIAS TRELAWDER, THE CASUALTY OF THE 1512 FRAUD, WERE THEIR DIRECT LINE. and N.A. document R/5854 -with its quote “To surrender all forged documents of which Vivian was one of the editors, only followed the main Billing line. relating to Smyths” to William BILLING or TRELODER - is dated 29 Mar. 1577. Where transcripts have shown TRELANDER these have been changed to TRELAWDER I AM ASSUMING HERE THAT THE ST MINVER FAMILIES ARE DESCENDED FROM RICHARD AND THE RIGHT 1n 1887 Vivian produced his own book on the Visitations, “with additions by Lieutenant- after expert examination of the original documents. Sir John Maclean explains the back- HAND SIDE OF THE PAGE SHOWS HOW THIS MIGHT HAVE COME ABOUT. POSSIBLE ST MINVER LINE RIGHT Colonel J. L. Vivian.” Unfortunately his attempt to fill out the Billing of Trevorder line ground to the use of the alias in his work “The Parochial and Family History of the Dean- THE EGLOSHAYLE AND BODMIN FAMILIES ARE ONLY TOUCHED ON HERE. BUT R/5838, which claims that John BILLING benefitted fraudulently from deeds ery of Trigg Minor, Cornwall”, first published in 1874. completely ignores the alias TRELAWDER line that stayed resident in St Minver, descended “not made in truth but only for perturbation of Wm. Byllyng alias Trelawder” is Comments, corrections, etc would be welcome. BODMIN AND EGLOSHAYLE (BRIEFLY) BOXED from Richard BILLING, and far from clarifying the position the documents he quotes seem dated 12 January 1570, and if this date is correct then clearly the forgeries were NOT Note that John BILLING of Trefrusa, St Minver, specifically refers in his will of 1616 Richard BILLING of TREVORDER (in St Breock) John TRELAWDER at odds with others in the National Archives, where Thomasine, daughter and heir of John, done in 1577, pace the previous references. to Richard BILLING of Maben (St Mabyn) as a kinsman. born circa 1430 of Trelawder, parish of (who married as Tasmin TRELODER) has her claim challenged by Robert, son of a John. Note too how members of both the St Tudy and St Minver branches became Quakers. ST MINVER CONTINUATION BELOW If nothing else, this shows the difficulty in dating documents 450 years old. And of St Minver. This update does now bring in William (d. 1571) and Thomas (d. 1576), both with children more immediate concern, the William listed below died in 1571 and we don’t have http://www.ardrosshouse.com/family.htm at St Minver. So we now have various possible families to which we assign all those listed another William, so hopefully he is the one subject to the ‘perturbation’! below born earlier than Dorothy in 1559 - not to mention a possible missing William. (v. right) born circa 1454 Regarding Vivian’s unnamed brother for the John who Vivian gives as dying 1555, born circa 1452 of St Minver perhaps the brother is William or Thomas or Richard; but it may be the Robert who Richard BILLING de TREVARDER Thomas BILLING = TRELAWDER Heiress Someone with the time and expertise to study and understand all the National Archives in 1525 appears on the Egloshayle Subsidy. Again, clearly more work needs doing! firstborn son documents (some held at Cornwall Archives) please come forward! second son married circa 1476 Nor is it clear who is the Robert son of John, making claim to the messuage of married circa 1474 Benethicke againTamsin BILLING al’s TRELODER and John WILL.
