He originally joined the franchise as General Manager and Head of Basketball Operations on May 25, 2017 before being elevated to his current position on August 19, 2019. Since his arrival in Atlanta, Schlenk has worked to reshape the team’s roster which now includes a young core of first round selections from his four drafts at the helm, led by Trae Young (fifth overall pick in 2018 and Eastern Conference All-Star starter in 2020), John Collins (drafted 19th overall in 2017 and Second Team All-Rookie in 2017- 18), Kevin Huerter (19th pick in 2018 and Second Team All-Rookie in 2018-19), De’Andre Hunter (fourth overall pick in 2019), Cam Reddish (drafted by Atlanta at No. 10 in 2019) and Onyeka Okongwu (sixth overall selection in 2020). Beginning at the 2020 trade deadline, Schlenk focused on bolstering the young roster with a group of talented and proven veterans. In February, 2020, Atlanta acquired young veteran center Clint Capela from Houston. To continue Atlanta’s transformation, in November, 2020, Atlanta landed Bogdan Bogdanovic (via restricted free agency) and Danilo Gallinari (via sign-and-trade) along with unrestricted free agent signees Rajon Rondo, Kris Dunn and Solomon Hill. In May of 2018, Schlenk tabbed Philadelphia 76ers Assistant Coach Lloyd Pierce to help lead and develop the team’s youthful roster. Schlenk, a veteran of more than 20 years in the NBA, joined the Hawks after 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, including the final six as Assistant General Manager, where he assisted two-time NBA Executive of the Year Bob Myers in the management of all day-to-day basketball operations activities. He was previously the Warriors’ Director of Player Personnel for two years after five seasons as an assistant coach and video scout. During Schlenk’s time as part of Golden State’s basketball leadership, the Warriors hired 2016 NBA Coach of the Year Steve Kerr as head coach, drafted two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry, two-time All-NBA selection Klay Thompson, three-time All-Defensive First Team pick and 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes; acquired 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut via trade; and signed 2014 NBA MVP and 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant and Shaun Livingston. Over his stint at Golden State, the Warriors reached three consecutive NBA Finals and won the championship in 2015 and 2017. Golden State compiled a record of 207-39 (.841) over that span, the best three-year run in NBA history, also becoming the first club to win 65-or-more games in three consecutive seasons. He was a video coordinator for the Miami Heat from 1999-04 (where he worked alongside Hall-of-Famer Pat Riley, Stan Van Gundy and Erik Spoelstra), Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Georgia in 1998-99 and part of the Orlando Magic’s basketball operations staff in 1997-98, where he worked under Hall-of-Famer Chuck Daly. Schlenk earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Management & Human Ecology from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where he also played basketball. He owns a Masters of Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from Wichita State University. A native of Selden, Kansas, Schlenk and his wife, Sarah, have two daughters, Morgan and Charlotte, and a son, Will. Lloyd Pierce Head Coach Lloyd Pierce is in his third season as the Hawks’ Head Coach, after being named the 13th full-time Head Coach in team history on May 11, 2018. In his first two seasons, he and his staff have been instrumental in the development of Eastern Conference All-Star starter Trae Young, John Collins, 2019 All-Rookie team member Kevin Huerter, and second-year forwards De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish. In May 2019, Pierce was named to the 2019-20 USA Basketball Men’s National Team coaching staff, joining Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr and Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright on Gregg Popovich’s staff.
