MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2021 By: Senator(s) Branning, Chassaniol, Sparks, To: Rules McCaughn, Suber, DeLano, Blackwell, England, Seymour, Fillingane, Jackson (32nd) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 521 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE INDUCTION OF MULTIPLE 2 GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER-SONGWRITER MARTY STUART 3 INTO THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME. 4 WHEREAS, a native of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Marty Stuart 5 is a multiple Grammy Award-Winning, American Country Music 6 Singer-Songwriter, known for both his traditional style and 7 eclectic merging of rockabilly, honky tonk and traditional country 8 music; and 9 WHEREAS, Marty received his first guitar at the age of three. 10 He began his professional career at the age of 12, playing 11 mandolin at events and touring with the Sullivan Family Gospel 12 Singers. Stuart soon dropped out of school to play mandolin with 13 Lester Flatt and his band, "The Nashville Grass." During his time 14 with Flatt, Stuart met a diverse group of musical greats, 15 including Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, the Eagles, 16 Emilylou Harris and Bob Dylan. He played with the band until the 17 group disbanded in 1978. After Lester died, Marty toured with 18 Johnny Cash's back-up band as a guitarist and married Cash's S. C. R. No. 521 *SS08/R90* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 21/SS08/R90 PAGE 1 (rdd\tb) 19 daughter, Cindy, which ended in divorce in 1988. When he was 12 20 years old, Marty met country singer Connie Smith and literally 21 fell in love. On the way home, he told his mother that he was 22 going to marry her, which he did in 1997; and 23 WHEREAS, Marty began his solo career in 1985 and released a 24 self-titled album in 1986 through Columbia Records. He released 25 several albums with MCA Records and an additional album with 26 Columbia Records, releasing hits such as "Burn Me Down" and 27 "Little Things." Later, he formed his own label called 28 Superlatone Records. Stuart recorded duets with Steve Earle, 29 Willie Nelson, B.B. King and Travis Tritt. He also worked behind 30 the scenes, serving as producer for songs by George Ducas, Pam 31 Tillis, and Jerry and Tammy Sullivan. Stuart worked on film 32 soundtracks for a diverse range of movies from the Steven Seagal 33 action flick Fire Down Below (1997) to the Western drama All The 34 Pretty Horses (2000); and 35 WHEREAS, working again with Earl Scruggs, Stuart earned a 36 Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Country Instrumental Performance for 37 their version of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." Legendary Banjo 38 Player Earl Scruggs had recorded the song decades earlier when he 39 teamed up with Lester Flatt. In 2002, Marty formed a band called 40 the Fabulous Superlatives. The group recorded several albums and 41 toured with the likes of Merle Haggard and the "Old Crow Medicine 42 Show Band"; and S. C. R. No. 521 *SS08/R90* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 21/SS08/R90 PAGE 2 (rdd\tb) 43 WHEREAS, Marty earned a Golden Globe nomination for the score 44 he wrote for the film, "All The Pretty Horses", in 2000. He has 45 earned five Grammys, the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year in 46 1992 with Travis Tritt, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for 47 Performance in 2005 at the Americana Music Honors and Awards. 48 Dedicated to preserving country music history, Marty became an 49 accomplished photographer, capturing images of country music 50 stars. His work and memorabilia have been displayed at exhibits 51 around the country. He also served as President of the Country 52 Music Foundation from 1994 to 2002; and 53 WHEREAS, Marty has demonstrated his commitment to his home 54 state of Mississippi. He is in the process of establishing the 55 Marty Stuart Congress of Country Music in his hometown of 56 Philadelphia, which will serve as a cultural and educational 57 center, and is expected to draw people from all over the world to 58 Mississippi in order to showcase the state's rich cultural 59 heritage of country music through live performance and educational 60 programming; and 61 WHEREAS, through these efforts, Marty Stuart demonstrates the 62 soul of country music, and we now honor his most recent 63 achievement: 64 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 65 MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That 66 we do hereby commend the multiple Grammy Award-Winning Country S. C. R. No. 521 *SS08/R90* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 21/SS08/R90 PAGE 3 (rdd\tb) 67 Music Singer-Songwriter Marty Stuart on his induction into the 68 Country Music Hall of Fame. 69 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to 70 Marty Stuart, forwarded to the Marty Stuart Congress of Country 71 Music, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Philadelphia, 72 Mississippi, and the Mississippi Arts Commission, and made 73 available to the Capitol Press Corps.
