Her work has included being one of the founders of the first Women’s Halfway House in Edmonton; working with youth in community theatre; setting up food and housing co-ops; facilitating women’s circles; and doing workshops on leadership and community organizing. ® In the late 1980s, She sat on the Steering Committee for the En’owkin School for Writing in Penticton as it was being established. She has also worked with the Aboriginal Arts Alliance, a group that advocated for the involvement, hiring and recognition of Native people in the arts across Canada, and which ultimately resulted in the development of the Aboriginal Arts Program at the Banff Centre for the Arts and created changes for Aboriginal people in the Canada Council for the Arts and for provincial Art Boards across Canada. Maria has also been involved in the following: ® National Collective of Walking With Our Sisters, a commemorative Art installation honouring Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women ® The Crossing Theatre Company, a small Indigenous theatre company dedicated to telling Indigneous stories through performance. Currently working on Tapwaywin, a play honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
