DETAILS OF FACULTIES AND BOARDS OF STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF CALICUT 1 2 Introduction The University of Calicut, the biggest in sheer size in the state of Kerala, is fully committed to meet its responsibilities by carrying out the educational mandate with which it has been charged in order to help drive the economic transformation of the country. The University of Calicut came into existence by an act of the Kerala State Government in 1968, and has become the prominent centre for higher learning in northern Kerala. It covers a jurisdiction up to five districts and also looks into the educational needs of the union territory of Lakdweep, due to its proximity to that area. The north Kerala, the erstwhile Malabar district of the British province of Madras, was largely deprived of educa- tional facilities and the situation has not substantially improved even today. The University of Calicut is the largest in Kerala with its campus sprawling across a picturesque mountain side in the district of Malappuram. The wide campus of more than 500 acres, harbouring thirty five teaching departments on it and 337 affiliated colleges attached to the Univer- sity, caters the educational needs of more than 275,000 students both in regular and distant modes. Considering its strength and resources, it has the potential to grow more in the field of higher education.
