All sports organisations are facing unprecedented challenges and I wish to acknowledge the significant contribution to netball that all sectors of our netball fraternity have made. Managing an organisation of this size requires an enormous amount of work by both employed staff and voluntary personnel. As President I have been very fortunate to work closely with all the staff and many of our volunteers who contribute tirelessly to make certain Netball North Harbour runs successfully. The staff of Netball North Harbour, with Lynette Brady as our CEO, provide an outstanding service and I want to acknowledge the contribution that each staff member is making as the organisation constantly moves forward into an increasingly professional management model. Netball North Harbour must continually strive to get more people playing netball more often, to provide pathways for players, coaches, umpires and administrators, to meet the demands for increasingly higher quality facilities and to have good business models and relationships with our Zone and also with our sponsors so that the organisation remains financially viable. Netball, like all other sports, is dependent upon the hard work of our many volunteers and their contribution is highly valued. This includes the contribution of our clubs, schools, coaches, managers, umpires, technical officials and the many parent supporters who help out where possible by providing transport to games, coaching teams, umpiring or being on the side-line every week to show their support. At this point I would like to congratulate one of our very well-known coaches Yvonne Willering, who had been appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. A well deserved recognition of all Yvonne’s hard work coaching and promoting our wonderful sport. Our volunteer workforce at Netball North Harbour includes the Games Committee which, under Michelle Newton’s leadership, works hard to ensure game days run smoothly. The challenges are many, but the success is obvious by the number of teams and individuals who continue to participate in our competitions and the players who gain success by playing in Zone and NNZ teams. Also, I wish to acknowledge our Umpires Committee and Umpire Coach/Assessing Panels at all levels, who work tirelessly not only on their own individual commitment to providing up to date umpiring skills for our games, but who also coach, assess and encourage up and coming umpires at every level of competition during the season. The Technical Officials, under the co-ordination of Judith Downer, are another voluntary group at Netball North Harbour who are constantly upskilling and then using these skills when appointed to attend local, National and International games as Bench Officials or Statisticians. The Board, under the leadership of our new Chair, Natalie Tabb, is continuing to apply its considerable and broad range of skills in setting up and reviewing new and existing policies, and on governing the business of Netball North Harbour and planning for its future. In my President’s report of 2015, I stated that it was the last time the National Championships would be played. It gives me great pleasure that I can now report Netball New Zealand has changed the format of its national tournaments and will be running new NZU18 and Open Grade tournaments which will give our players who are not selected for BEKO or the ANZ Premiership teams another competition to work towards. In finishing, I wish to congratulate everyone involved in our Netball North Harbour team, led by Lynette, who planned and put into place the UNISS netball competition held here at our netball centre. It comprised 119 different schools (1428 players), 128 umpires, our own team of bench officials and statisticians and of course, staff and many volunteers including some of our life members who really enjoyed being present and able to assist at the tournament. It was certainly a proud moment when Netball North Harbour was awarded the Tass Print Sporting Event of the Year at the Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards held in November. I look forward to another successful season in 2020.
