Explanatory Guide Through the kindness of Mrs lly Benedek, Archivist of Sydney Grammar School, a photostat of the roll of the Sydney College 1835-1850 was supplied to the Archivist of The King's School and has been placed on computer at The King's School Parramatta. The Sydney College Roll sets out bare details of enrolments: viz 1 Allen George 19/1/1835-3/1841 11 George Allen Toxteth Park George Allen 2 Bell Joshua 19/1/1835-8/1836 8 Thomas Bell Carters Bar. Removed to Parramatta Thomas Barker Subsequent research at The King's School involving the use of the New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages 1788-1856 has allowed some recording of exact dates of birth, exact dates of parents' marriage and on a few entries the candidate's marriage. The maiden names of many mothers have also been located. If the candidate's parents were unmarried, and the mother is known, 'and' replaces 'm' as an indicator. For some entries, the father's occupation has been located. If identified the religion of the candidate at his baptism is recorded as is the religion of his parents at their marriage. A master list containing individual references is held at The King's School as is the final draft used to create this document A breakdown of the annual enrolment is also included. Other references consulted include a cursory look at Shipping Records for passengers arriving in Sydney 1825-1850, a glance at John Sands Directories, as well as the indexes of Old Chum and the RA.H.S. The relevant volumes of the Australian Dictionary of Biography and H.J. Gibbney and Ann G. Smith A Biographical Register 1788-1939 (two volumes) were extensively examined and, where relevant, such information as was gleaned is noted within the entries. To extend this record of pupils attending the Sydney College, research concerning the candidate's adulthood would be most useful and quite possible within current availability of material. Of particular interest would be the adult careers and marriage details of candidates. Where it was easily accessible the convict status of the parents has also been attached. More work will be done to fill gaps in these areas. Many of the boys entered the Sydney College through sponsorship from a trustee, shareholder or member of the Committee. Further work will be attempted during 1993 concerning the Committee and Shareholders of Sydney College with the intention of indicating their status in similar form to the pupils. Included in this work will be a list of boys they sponsored. Work will continue in an effort to fill the gaps in various entries for such research is a form of continuous adjustment, as minor details are uncovered. A new document will be printed at the start of 1993. It will take into account all research being done dunng the rest of this year. Work will also continue on The King's School Parramatta's pupils 1832-1850 so that a comprehensive comparison may be possible between the two Schools by 1993. Meanwhile, some general trends are already evident. It is clear from the research into the clientele of Sydney College and The King's School Parramatta up to the former's closure in 1850, that historians and researchers into nineteenth century education in New South Wales have confused the stated aims of the two schools with the reality. They have usually stated that the Sydney College catered mostly for the sons of ordinary folk and The King's School mostly for the sons of the Colony'S elite. This research document shows the reverse is probably true. The Sydney College mostly catered for sons of professional people, the sons of army officers and the sons of wealthy businessmen and merchants. The King's School Parramatta's clientele to 1850 had some of the above categories but most of its pupils were sons of tradesmen and small farmers. Both schools predominately drew pupils of Church of England faith. The King's School, though a Church of England foundation, excluded no one on grounds of religion and indeed had a slightly greater percentage of other religions than did the Sydney College probably because it took more sons of tradesmen and small farmers. Pupils stayed at The King's School longer than they did at Sydney College where a wealthier parent population was more likely to venture overseas. Both were savagely affected by the scarlet fever epidemics of the early 1840s and by the economic depression of the mid 1840s. The subsequent careers of pupils of Sydney College outshone those of The King's School Parramatta, this perhaps owing more to the better community standing of the boys' fathers than a better teaching standard, although I suspect the better educated W.T. Cape ran a more liberal curriculum than did Robert Forrest who was constricted by a curriculum drawn from Eton College and by a very ordinary education in his own youth. The convict parentage of The King's School Parramatta and that of Sydney College cannot yet be compared effectively because insufficient work has yet been done on the latter.
