For that reason you need to start putting suggestions into the smoker's mind even before you meet them. I confirm all my appointments by email. That is not only good business practice, it give me the chance to start influencing the client long before I ever see them. There are two things you can do. You can put a hypnotic suggestion into the email that will start working on their unconscious mind in the days leading up to the session and you can send them things to get them into the right mindset to stop smoking. I put the following wording into all my appointment confirmation emails right at the end: And now that you have made a firm commitment to change, your subconscious mind is actually working on it for you, and you can expect to sense some changes even before we meet. I look forward to meeting you. Notice that this wording is actually quite imprecise. It promises change without saying what will change and promises that something will be sensed without saying how it will be sensed. This allows the unconscious mind to attach meaning to anything that happens and to start convincing the client that the process has started. It also links the last word 'meet' with the next line 'meeting you'. This sets up an association between the sensing that might happen and the 'meeting' that definitely will happen. I also attach to the email a couple of pages for them to read about smoking in general. One document is about exactly how your body reacts to stopping smoking. This will seed the idea of the benefits to come and give them a sense of reward for coming to the session. One is a checklist about when and where they smoke. This is to get them thinking about triggers and moods and to recognise patterns in their own behaviour. Most people have never thought about when and why they smoke. The third document is a checklist about their motivation. This is to get them thinking about what they are going to do instead, how they are going to feel and how they are going to reward themselves. Reading these will put the whole idea of stopping in their mind and since they want to stop anyway, just reinforces their determination to quit. This strategy of pre-session persuasion is just another tool you should use, and helps to accumulate the energy needed to move from being a smoker to being a non-smoker. Meeting the client When I meet a client for the first time I ask them to write down their name and email address. And while they are doing that I inspect them minutely and try to figure out what their body is telling me. I look at their fingernails, signs of chronic anxiety; their hair, poor grooming suggests depression; how they are dressed, dark colours suggest lack of confidence; their jewellery, loud jewellery suggests low self esteem - and so on. People are signalling how they feel all the time. If you choose to listen you will learn that body language doesn't lie. I have had a fascination with body language most of my life and I get as much practice as I can. Every time I am in a public place - on a bus, a foyer, waiting in a shop - I spent the time watching someone intently, trying to learn what their actions, posture, clothes, expression, interactions with others is telling the world. Sometimes you get nothing much, but now and again I get a sudden insight David Mason 3 www.key-hypnosis.com into that person's life, what they feel, how they see the world. It is endlessly fascinating and when it is done right you get total rapport with the other person, you really understand how they feel. After a while, you get a sense of general categories. I can now watch people go by, and think 'Depression', or 'Anxiety' or 'Unhappy marriage' just from the signals they are giving off. I recommend it as a way to increase your rapport building skill with clients. Listen to what they are saying on all channels. Starting the session One of the signs of a non-confident therapist is how they deal with their client in the first session. Many new therapists fail to get the best out of the first session. Clients come to hypnotherapy to get hypnotized. They expect to be hypnotized and no matter what you do, if you don't hypnotize them they feel cheated and that they didn't get what they came for. Most newbies spend the whole
