All other activities within the Polytechnic revolve around the Library: teaching, learning and research which are the basis for the establishment of a citadel of learning. To enable new students to settle down quickly to independent study activities, the Library orientation lecture is usually given within the first few days of resumption. However, not all new students are present for this very important contact programme. Hence this Guide. The Guide contains all information you need to know about the library: opening hours, access to resources, location of these resources, services rendered by the staff, the rules, regulations and conduct guiding proper use of library books, journals, computer systems etc. Why not visit the library and enter into the world of knowledge? Whether you are a fresh student or returning, this guide will be an invaluable tool to exploiting the vast resources of LASPOTECH library system. The Polytechnic Libraries at Ikorodu, Isolo and Surulere join the rest of the Polytechnic to formally welcome all new staff and students to the Lagos State Polytechnic. Happy reading. Polytechnic Librarian 3 INTRODUCTION The Lagos State Polytechnic Library commenced operation at Isolo on 3rd March, 1978 in one of the classrooms at Management Block. The library was started with the acquisition of 882 titles in the areas of Technology, Mathematics and Management from the then British Council Library. On 21st May 1986, two branch libraries at Surulere and Ikosi campuses began operations. As a result of the Lagos State Polytechnic movement to a permanent campus at Ikorodu, the main library was therefore moved to Ikorodu campus. Like all academic libraries, the Lagos State Polytechnic Library is the pivot on which all academic activities in the Polytechnic Institution are hinged and it is vital to the academic needs of users in many ways: - It enables you take maximum advantage of the available library resources and services. - Helps you to develop a life long learning skill for research and private works as well as - Helps you to develop reading skills not only for functional but for recreational purposes. The Lagos State Polytechnic operates in three campuses viz: Ikorodu, Isolo and Surulere and each of these campuses has its own library. The main Library is located in the library complex at Ikorodu campus of the Polytechnic. The main Library coordinates all the activities of the various unit, divisions and other branch libraries. All the campuses provide seating accommodation for up to 3000 readers. The total collection in the Polytechnic library at the three campuses is about 450,000 volumes including journals and other special collections. 4 OPENING HOURS During Session Monday – Friday 8.00a.m. - 8.00p.m Saturdays and Sundays 9.00 a.m. - 6.00p.m Environmental Saturday 12.00noon - 6.00p.m. During Vacation Monday – Friday 8.00 a.m. - 6.00p.m. Saturday 8.00a.m. - 6.00p.m. Sunday and Public Holidays - Closed ELIGIBILITY TO USE THE LIBRARY No person may make use of the Library until he has registered and has been issued with a library ticket. Admission to and use of the library is restricted to registered users only. The following are eligible to be registered as readers in the Polytechnic Library; with the privileges of borrowing books and making use of reference materials. a) Members of Lagos State Polytechnic Governing Council b) Members of Academic Staff of the Polytechnic as well as eligible senior members of Administrative and Technical Staff. c) Full Time Registered Students of the Lagos State Polytechnic The following may use the library for reference only: (a) Alumni of the Polytechnic and any other outsiders may be permitted to use the library on a temporary basis for purpose of study and reference only by the Polytechnic Librarian. (b) Part-Time students of the Lagos State Polytechnic ADMISSION INTO THE LIBRARY At the entrance of the Library, students are required to show their library tickets to the Porter on duty, who will check it to ensure that they are registered members of the 5 Library and that their cards are current. Without the library tickets students will not be allowed into the library. Bags, umbrellas and other personal effects must be dropped at the cloak. Valuable items should however be removed from the bag before dropping at the cloak. The library will not be responsible for any loss of library users’ personal effect. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES 1. All students, academic and other eligible senior staffs are expected to register in the library on admission and appointment, respectively. 2. All newly admitted students must undergo the compulsory library orientation before they are registered in the library. 3. Registration of students takes place at the Circulation desk immediately, after the library orientation. 4. Students must collect registration cards at the circulation desk. Students who fail to complete library registration formalities during the exercise may not enjoy borrowing facilities. 5. Students must present their admission letters and receipts for payment of school fees before being issued with library registration card. 6. Student should complete the registration card and give to his Head of Department for endorsement. 7. The endorsed card should be returned to the circulation desk in the library with students’ passport photograph. A library ticket will thereafter be issued to the student by the circulation librarian. 8. For freshers, the following items are required for library registration: Clearance form from the school Payment receipt(s) 2 recent passport photographs Registration number Registration is done at the beginning of each session for all students. While a staff is entitled to borrow two books for a period of one month. (b) Short Loan (Reserve books) - Books can be recommended by lecturers to be placed on reserve. These books can be borrowed on a short term loan. Any library user is eligible to borrow one reserve book for a period of two hours, renewable thereafter if no other reader has requested for the book. Reserve books are to be read within the library. (c) Week-end Loan - Books on reserve can be borrowed for the weekend. Weekend loans starts from 5.00pm on Saturdays in each of the three libraries. Reserve books borrowed for the weekend must be returned by 9.00am prompt on the following Monday. A fine of #20.00 per hour shall be charged for lateness in returning reserved books. Recall i.
