By the time you read this we will have welcomed many people, from across the diocese, to the Saints in Every Generation event in the Cathedral. Two quite different occasions, but both a sign of our commitment to each other as members together of the family of God here in greater Lincolnshire. As you know, as a diocese we have committed ourselves to being faithful in worship, confident in discipleship and joyful in service. This year has seen the launch of our discipleship programme, aimed at helping all of us to think and pray about the particular and distinct contribution we can make to the life of the world and in response to God’s call. One of the highlights of Saints in Every Generation was the opportunity for everyone present to pledge to do one thing, however large or small, which would take them further on their journey towards confident discipleship. I would like to thank everyone who attended and assure you that I will read each of the pledges you so faithfully gave. This time of year is often associated with new beginnings, and that is certainly the case in the life of the diocese this year. I am delighted that we will soon be welcoming the Reverend Mark Steadman as the next Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey. Mark will be installed at evensong in the Cathedral on 10th October. All are most welcome to attend. If you would like to do so, please let the precentor’s office know so that everyone can be welcomed and accommodated (01522 561632). Later in the year, we will welcome the Reverend Dr Nicholas Chamberlain among us as suffragan bishop of Grantham. I’ve written elsewhere of my belief that Dr Chamberlain brings fabulous gifts, a truly pastoral heart, a profound faith and indefatigable dedication to the mission and purpose of the Church. I am gratified that we have been able to attract a priest of his calibre to be bishop of Grantham, and I ask you to hold him in your prayers as he prepares for his ordination to the episcopate on 19 November. Alongside this, there is also a significant farewell to be said as Tim Barker prepares to leave the diocese after 17 years of faithful service as parish priest and then archdeacon. As Tim moves to his new post of Dean of Guernsey and Rector of St André de la Pommaraye later in the autumn, he and Judy will go with our love blessings and a huge debt of gratitude for all that they have given to the diocese. With every good wish, +Christopher Lincoln: 3 Archdeacon Tim Barker’s Visitation to Bolingbroke Deanery It was good to welcome Archdeacon Tim to all of our Churches at the end of August and the beginning of September (with the exception of one, but he will get round to that before he leaves [see Bishop Christopher’s letter]). It is one of the traditional duties of an Archdeacon to check if everything in a Parish Church is running as it should, but more often than not it has been observed in the breach or the task has been delegated to the Rural Dean. I have done several groups in the past and really enjoyed seeing what happens with care, dedication and much love in our amazing parish Churches. I know Tim really enjoyed his visitation and felt it brought so much of our shared ministry alive. This reinvigorated Visitation Scheme is so much more than checking the silver etc. (I know Tim particularly enjoyed some of the very special communion plate we still use in our worship) because it is shared with the Bishops in a four year cycle to make sure that we all make connection and better share the work we are doing. Because we have had the Archdeacon first we can expect a visit from the Bishop in two years’ time and his visit will be primarily to those in leadership ministry but at the same time will want to check out with parishioners how well the clergy and others are serving them. As part of that process there will be a Ministry Development Review for each Incumbent lead by a member of the Bishop’s Staff one year and the next year the Rural Dean will informally make sure agreed objectives are reasonable and helpful. Other members of the Ministry Team will go through a similar process but with other reviewers taking the lead. It was a good start to the process and I look forward to Archdeacon Tim’s report when he has time to write it! The report will be a useful tool to help us simplify and hone the work we do in our Churches as will the other aspects of the process to gain a fresh insight to the work we share. So the whole process is not so much a visitation but a renewal of our understanding of what it means to be part of a shared ministry, “both yours and mine”. I personally wish Tim & Judy every blessing in Guernsey, I will miss his support and pray for the appointment of a new Archdeacon as soon as possible. I am not sure what the interim arrangements are but no doubt we will be supported by Justine, the Archdeacon of Boston and Mark Steadman the new Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey.
