SCOPE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRIAL RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE 2 3 Background: West Godavari District is situated on the west banks of river Godavari and is known as rice granary of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded by Khammam District on the north, Krishna District on south west and Bay of Bengal on the south. The District has 3 different geographical zones the delta, the upland and Agency track. The Kolleru Lake, which connects the West Godavari District and Krishna District is an extensive shallow depression and is an ideal place for breeding. The Kolleru Lake is identified for development as tourism place. Paddy is the priciple crop of the District besides Sugarcane, Chilles, Coconut and Tobbaco. The Upland area of the District is rich in substantial production of Mango, Cashew, Citrus and other fruits. In costal areas fish culture and prawn culture is developed in the last decade. The major crops grown are Paddy, Sugarcane, Maize, Tobacco, Red Gram, Green Gram, Black Gram, Groundnut, Sunflower and Pulses etc. The following table gives the details about the area and the production of various crops in the District. Marine Products: West Godavari District is having 17 K.M. of costal line and river Godavari passing through this district. From West Godavari District nearly Rs. 1000 Crores of Fish has been exported to foreign countries and various places in country. Nearly Rs. 700 Crores of Prawn is being exported to European Countries, America and other countries in the World. The area under aqua tanks in the district is about 23200 hectares and the area is increasing due to further excavation of tanks. 6 Forests: The area covered by Forests is 0.812 lakh hectares (1,95,692 acres) forming 10.48% of the total geographical area of the district. Special Emphasis is being laid on the development of this rich natural resource for increasing the revenue and also to provide gainful employment to the rural poor by raising commercial plantation viz., Eucalyptus, Teak etc. Live stock Population: Cattle 2.48 lakh Baffalows 4.19 " Sheeps 0.74 " Goats 1.01 " Pigs 0.27 ,, Poultry 83.93 ,, Four private Dairies viz. "GOPALA MITRA" Scheme has been introduced to take up artificial insemination, and health care of animals in the villages. The West Godavari Livestock Development Association (A L D A) was registered was registered under this 24 Stationary Departmentmental Artificial Insemination centres were convered as Mobile Centres. Further, 105 Gopala Mitra Centres were identified to cover 100% breedable population, out of which 66 Gopalammitras are functioning and earning their livelihood through this scheme under Self Employment. Tourism: Kolleru Lake, Perupalem Beach (Near Narsapuram), Bowdha Aramamlu At Jeelakarra Gudem near Kamavarapu Kota are prominent tourist places in West Godavari District Godavari District. This river borders the entire eastern boundary of the district. At Vijjeswaram, the river breaks into two branches namely, the Gowthami Godavari and Vasista Godavari and flows towards the south of the district before falling into the Bay of Bengal near Antarvedi. The other minor rivers which feedthe irrigation tanks in the upland areas are Tammileru, Yerrakalava, Byneru, Kovvada Kalava, Jalleru and Gunderu. The Kolleru lake is an extensive shallow depression created by a gradual rise in the level of the country on either side by alluvial deposits from the Godavari and Krishna Canals. The lake receives a large volume of drainage watr of the surrounding deltaic area. It ha an out let to the sea through Upputeru.
