Events in the past year highlighted the rise and fall in emotions which touch us all in this great industry. The success of Choisir at the Royal meeting at Ascot and the dizzying heights of Northerly's victories were tempered by the loss of one of the giant figures of our time - Jack Ingham AO. I am able to comment from first hand knowledge of the contribution which Jack made to the racing industry. With his brother Bob he built Woodlands into one of the largest and most successful racing concerns in this or any other age. The brothers enjoyed success on the racing stage unmatched in the last fifty years. To judge them on that financial contribution would be to seriously undervalue their achievements. Jack Ingham lived for his involvement in racing - he derived as much pleasure from a maiden win as he did from group racing victories. At administration level he gave his time and knowledge unstintingly. Our sport is one that is built on faith, hope and commitment of people like Jack Ingham and the industry, while poorer for his passing, is mindful of the continuing involvement of so many members of the Ingham family. On the local stage Northerly dazzled us with his achievements. Winner of nine Group 1 races including two Cox Plates and a Caulfield Cup, Northerly was awarded Horse of the Year 2002/2003 accumulating $9.3 million in prize money. Northerly and his trainer Fred Kersley confirm that racing is an Australia-wide sport. The achievements of the Paul Perry trained Choisir at Ascot were nothing short of astounding. I'm sure that many Australians believed that our thoroughbreds (particularly sprinters) could hold their own with any in the world but it took a group of Novacastrians to take up the challenge and prove the point. Congratulations to all concerned - particularly Paul Perry who accepted victory so graciously. Choisir's victories lifted Australian horses a considerable notch in the world handicap ratings and increased the value of our bloodstock. More generally, a most welcome fact this year was the heightened popularity of carnival race meetings across Australia - drawing larger and younger attendances. A clever mix of sport and entertainment by innovative race clubs is opening an exciting era for feature racing events showcased to a growing number of race-goers. Remember, racing is the second most attended sport in the nation after Australian Rules football. There is a high level of demand for records relating to the health and performance of the industry and, since 1999, the Fact Book has established itself as a handy and reliable guide to any person seeking information on major aspects of the industry. Our thanks are extended to those many people and organisations who assisted in the compilation of this book.
