Robert N. Ginsburg Celebration of Life Florida Keys Field Trip‐ 12 January, 2019 Trip leaders: Gene Shinn, Al Hine, Phil Kramer A field trip to must‐see Pleistocene reef exposures and modern sedimentaryenvironmentsmade universally famous during Bob Ginsburg’s long research career. We depart Miami (Coconut Grove) in University of Miami Vans no later than 7:00 am. Stop 1.Excursionbeginsafter our vans reach Windley Key Fossil Reef State Park and quarrywhereweprovide overview of Florida Keys geological and sedimentary 4 environments and processes while examining exhibits and Florida Bay exposures of the Pleistocene coral reef Key Largo Formation. In the Park’s education facility 3 we will dedicate a plaque to celebrate Bob’s memory and 2 contributions to understanding Van Florida Keys Geology and its 1 Boat ecosystems. 1 Stop 2. We will meet and board a large shallow draft catamaran at nearby Whale Harbor and travel to Cotton Key Bank and Island to core and examine mangroves algal mats, storm layers, and mangrove peats. Flippers and dive masks will be provided on board. Bring your own sneakers for wading in lime mud. Stop 3. Travel inter coastal channel to Cowpins pass and cruise through Tavernier creek and depending on weather stop at Tavernier Key bank or Rodriguez bank where we wade or swim to examine transition from seagrass to Porities coral belt to intertidal Goniolithon belt and transition to marine grass sediment facies populated by marine grasses replete with Callianassa sp shrimp burrows, mounds, and their rod shaped fecal pellets. Stop 4. Cruise through mangrove lined tidal creek to Largo sound and enter Key Largo cut to view it’s 1 to 4 m high vertical exposures of Key Largo reef limestone capped by soilstone/caliche crust. We stop at several places to examine annual banding in Pleistocene fossil Montastrea sp coral heads. Trip ends at nearby home base for the boat where vans meet to take us to the evening bar‐b‐que at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. A box lunch will be provided. It will be a long day, so please come prepared. Participants should bring wading shoes, hat, sunscreen, sun glasses, water bottle, camera, rain jacket. 1. Windley Key 2 Cotton Key 3.
