RIVERSIDE Now Open All Day on Saturdays!

Chulmleigh Old Fair 2018 At 6.30pm on July 24th this year, a service in St Mary Magdalene church is the calm start to our six day, action-packed Fair. Once the royalty (the Fair Queen and her attendants) have been blessed, the fun begins! You can watch street entertainers and the hotly anticipated ‘money scramble’ in front of the Town Hall in Fore Street. The opening celebrations go on until about 10pm. Save some energy for the rest of the Fair, because no- one would want to miss Wednesday’s activities! The Country Fair starts with its craft stalls; sheep show; flower show; dog show; climbing walls and food and drink - accompanied by live music and the rumble of vintage tractors. A party atmosphere maintains the energy at the Golf Club in the evening. Sports Day is on Thursday – much more fun to be had by all ages including drivers, badminton players, golfers and enthusiastic athletes. The Gymkhana and Horse Show on Friday is a great chance for young and older riders to smarten up their horse for showing; amaze everyone at their jumping skills or dress up their pony for the fun races. Even if you don’t ride, what could be better on a warm summer’s day, than sitting in a beautiful Devon field, eating ice-cream and watching horses go through their paces? In the evening you can exhaust yourself playing six a side football and then sleep well before Saturday’s events. This is the real town Carnival Day. A fancy dress competition and parade start us off, followed by street entertainment, a fun run and then games for children in Fore Street. As darkness falls, the atmosphere livens up even more; there is music and dancing until late- supported by local refreshments. If you love history and re-enactments we have an exciting encampment of soldiers on the playing field during the Fair. With The Company of the Lamb, frequent battles and skirmishes are bound to occur- a lot of energy, skill and enthusiasm is displayed by the group who are frequently joined by members of the audience. We all work hard to organise this high spot of our community‘s year - we’d love to see you all enjoy it too. When King Henry lll granted Chulmleigh the royal charter in 1253 to allow us to hold a Fair, he can hardly have expected it still to be going strong, 765 years later! A new finan- cial year not only means that £82,609 of new funding is on offer, but the fund also has a new name – the Communities Together Fund. This new name is in recognition that the fund, formerly called the Town and Parishes (TAP) Fund, has now been revised and will be open to local groups and community organisations in October 2018 to apply, as well as parish and town coun- cils who can apply for the funding from 21 May 2018. Devon County Council contributes £1 for each elector and North Devon District Council contributes 10p per elector. Funding is available to ‘kick-start’ local projects and to encourage local action for projects and services that will make a real difference at com- munity level.
