Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem was published in 1947 by the French publisher Durand, but was commissioned in 1941 by the collaborationist French Vichy regime. Duruflé was still working on the piece at the time of the regime's collapse in 1944, and completed it in 1947, dedicating it to the memory of his father. It exists in three orchestrations but tonight it is heard in its original form with organ alone. At the time of commission, Duruflé was working on an organ suite using themes from Gregorian chants and he incorporated sketches for this into the Requiem. Thus, the work uses the Gregorian Missa Pro Defunctis (Mass for the Dead) from which virtually all the thematic material comes. The organ score is an integral part of the work and its unique effect. The Choir of The Church of the Epiphany in downtown Washington DC, three blocks from the White House, is a mixed voice choir in which professional section leaders augment choral volunteers. The Church is situated on G Street NW and was founded in 1842. The building itself was consecrated ten years later and within six years, the congregation had established the Epiphany Church home to help the poor and sick, a vibrant social ministry that continues at Epiphany today. Soon after its founding, the American Civil War split the congregation: Senator Jefferson Davis rented pew no. 14, and three of his children were confirmed at the church, but after secession, when Davis moved to Richmond VA and became the Confederacy's President, the pew was rented by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. On March 6, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln attended the funeral of General Frederick Lander at the church. In the Spring of 1893, Epiphany’s choir became the first mixed vested choir in the city and music has since remained one of the church’s foremost ministries. Today, Epiphany provides a spiritual focus for all people representative of the Washington metropolitan community and its artistic outreach includes the renowned Tuesday Concerts Series which presents largely national but often international artists in concert every Tuesday lunchtime. The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
