Focus of the Week: Persistence We are SAFE, RESPECTFUL and ACCEPTING TERM 1 IMPORTANT DATES What’s on this week: Monday February 25 Debating at Wollongong University Wednesday February 27 BHPS School Assembly Friday March 1 Clean Up Australia Day What’s coming up: Monday March 4 Parliament Induction Ceremony @10am Wednesday March 13 BHPS School Assembly Friday March 15 McKeon Swimming for Stage 3 starts Wednesday March 20 BHPS P&C Meeting @ 9am Friday April 5 Musica Viva Dear parents, carers and community members, Can you believe we are already in Week 5? Where has that time gone? There is a wonderful feel to the school as I walk around the playground and pop into classrooms. Students are engaged and enjoying the learning opportunities they are taking part in. We are continuing to focus on our five keys of the You Can Do It initiative – Organisation, Confidence, Resilience, Getting Along and Persistence and our students are constantly sharing how they are demonstrating these keys to success. Take a look further in the newsletter to see what our focus for this week is. McKeon Swim and Water Safety Program This year, our school has been lucky enough to be chosen to participate in the McKeon Family Foundation Swim and Water Safety Program. This foundation, in conjunction with Clubs NSW and Healthy Cities Illawarra will run a five week program for our Stage 3 students starting next Friday. The aim of the initiative is to reinforce the water safety message and skills of our students before they enter young adulthood; where they can make incorrect choices of when, where and how to swim. It is an incredible opportunity for ALL our students, regardless of swimming ability and I 1 can’t wait for our students to be involved. A big thank you to the McKeon Family Foundation, Clubs NSW and Healthy Cities Illawarra (who run our very own Play Pod) for involving our school. Changes and reminders about school events There have been some slight changes to a few school events this year due to timetables and clashes with learning times. School assemblies will now be on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm (odd weeks in Term 1, then even weeks Terms 2, 3 and 4). These will be advertised on the front of the school newsletter to remind all parents and carers when they are on. Scripture will now fall on a Thursday afternoon to ensure our students are engaged immediately in learning opportunities on a Monday morning. Our Breakfast Club initiative runs every morning from 8:30am – 8:50am. After 8:50am, our staff are preparing for their day in the classroom and cooking has stopped. Having breakfast every day is an essential part of being ready to tackle the day ahead. Without this important meal, students feel lethargic and find the absorption of learning difficult as the morning progresses. If your child has not had breakfast, please ensure they are at school during this timeframe so they don’t miss out. Koori Catch Up Last Tuesday, we held our very first Koori Catch Up for the year and what a fantastic turn out. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, siblings and carers who came to our Catch Up to hear all the wonderful opportunities our Aboriginal Education Team are working on with our students. If you missed this opportunity to pop into school, we will be having a few during the year so watch this space for details on when the next one is organised. Thank you to Mrs Mangos, Troy and Veronica for organising this opportunity and to Mrs Maranesi for working as part of our Aboriginal Education Team to ensure events such as this are possible. Debating Today a team of five students went with Mrs Parkes to the University of Wollongong to take part in a debating training day. Students were put through their paces and enjoyed all the new learning they were involved in. They especially enjoyed the workshop presentations and the demonstration debate. We can’t wait to see these new skills in action and hopefully our team will compete in a number of debating tournaments this year. Clean Up Australia Day Our school is participating in Clean Up Australia Day this coming Friday. Our students will assemble at 2pm and each stage will be given a designated area to clean. Thank you to Miss Finlay for organising our participation in this important event. The theme of the initiative is Change Starts with You and the idea behind this event is to ignite an enthusiasm and desire among the community to get involved and make a difference to their local environment themselves. For our own event, it would be greatly appreciated if students could each bring in a pair of gloves and a plastic bag (plastic gloves and bags can be recycled in a soft plastics bin which our Stage 3 students will organise). Thank you for your support of this initiative. ThinkUKnow This week you will again find a helpful information sheet from ThinkUKnow – Australia’s first (and only) nationally delivered crime prevention program. The focus for the week is Instagram; please look over this information and if you have any more questions head to https://www.thinkyouknow.org.au Have a wonderful week!
