CRICKET CANADA An Introduction since1785 ABOUT CRICKET IN CANADA A game popularly known as the “ Gentleman’s Game “ within Commonwealth Nations has its unique culture in the world of sport, laying emphasis on ideals such as grace, sportsmanship, character and complexity. The sport is believed to have been introduced into the country by British soldiers playing matches at the Province of Quebec city in the year 1785. Encouraged by George A. Barber in the 19th Centaury, famously known as “The father of Canadian cricket”. It was declared as the national sport in 20th Centaury by Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Cricket is the fastest growing sport in Canada and is played in all 10 provinces by over 50,000 recreational cricketers. The rapid growth is fueled Sir John A. Macdonald through immigration of people from cricket playing (Prime Minister of Canada 1867–1873, 1878–1891) countries and with aggressive grass roots programs that welcomes new participants to the sport. CRICKET CANADA Cricket Canada is the governing body for the sport of Cricket in Canada as recognized by Sport Canada and the International Cricket Council whose mandate is to administer and develop the sport at the grass roots and prepare Canada’s national teams for all international competitions. One of the top six associates of International Cricket Council. Presently competes internationally at the Men’s, Women’s and U19 levels. Strong history for qualification at the Men’s Cricket World Cups in 1979, 2003, 2007 & 2011. U19 team has qualified for four U19 Cricket World Cups; 2002, 2004, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2017 “Cricket Canada KIDS” has fueled growth of cricket in schools with over 2,000 schools playing cricket as structured introductory programs. Over 100,000 kids have been introduced to cricket in Under 19 our school system. Structure Cricket Canada is the National Sports Organisation In charge of the development and administration of Cricket in Canada. ICC Cricket Canada is an associate member of International Cricket Council, the global Cricket Canada governing body of cricket. Provincial Members (10) Currently, all ten provinces are members of Cricket Canada. Leagues Provincial members administer and govern Cricket within their own geographical Clubs boundaries Teams Provincial members are formed by leagues, clubs and teams. Players/ Individuals Cricket Canada operates under written By- Laws that are compliant with not for profit act of Canada and Sport Canada guidelines. CRICKET CANADA GOVERNANCE "Cricket Canada is a national sports organization, set up as a not-for-profit, and complies with Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act and with Sport Canada requirements The highest level of governance for Cricket Canada is set out in the By-Laws. These set out the rules for governing and operating the corporation. The by-laws define the membership of Cricket Canada, the conduct of meetings of the membership, and defines a board of directors that are responsible for governing Cricket Canada. Cricket Canada’s Financial performance receives an annual third party audit through a chartered accountant and is publicly shared on its website. Board of Directors are elected by the membership and are responsible for supervising the activities of the corporation and for making decisions regarding those activities. The board of directors is accountable to the members. It is responsible for managing and supervising the activities and affairs of the corporation. The board has a number of powers including the ability to make policies, manage the day to day affairs, deal with discipline, determine fees, enter into contracts, and if needed borrow money. The secondary level of guidance are Cricket Canada policies. Policies deal with a wide range of issues and provide guidance to the board in dealing with a wide range of situations. The third level of governance are operating guidelines for staff and board members, dealing with the correct procedures for day to day management of the business of Cricket Canada. ACHIEVEMENTS • Cricket Canada has qualified and played for Senior Men’s World Cup Events, Sahara Cup, ICC Trophy to name a few. • U19 Men’s World Cup. • Hosting of International Events in Canada. • Cricket Development in Canada. • Governance Excellence.
