Identify the context – the who/what/when b. Identify the significance – why is this statement of importance to understanding plot, character, or theme? c. Identify any literary technique being used in the quote. (Hint: If I put it on the test, it probably has a literary technique in it.) Things to know: 1. What’s in a name? Explain the meaning behind Benvolio, Mercutio, and Tybalt’s name. 2. What’s the connection between King Henry wanting a divorce and Queen Elizabeth liking the theater? 3. How does Shakespeare employ the various ironies – dramatic, verbal, and situational – to add tension and suspense to the plot? 4. How does the Elizabethan concept of the Great Chain of Being explain the tension between Juliet and her parents? What is the connection between the nymph, the shephard, the compass, and the play? 5. What fears plague Juliet as she contemplates taking the potion? 6. Contrast the attitudes toward love in the play – Romeo v. Juliet, Romeo v. Benvolio/Mercutio, Lady Capulet v. Old Capulet v. the Nurse… 7. Exactly what does Shakespeare think about the feud? What evidence might show that attitude? 8. How could “Wisely and slow. He stumbles who runs fast” be the theme for the entire play? 9. How many scenes could you add zombies into without having to change much of the play? .
