CLAWTON CLARION April 2019 Welcome to the April 2019 edition of the Clawton Clarion. April is the month of Easter and this year it is celebrated late in the month, so here’s hoping for good weather and time with family and friends. Clawton is a vibrant and welcoming community with lots to celebrate, however I am having great difficulty in getting contributions to share in the Clawton Clarion each month. We would love to hear your good news and family announcements; as well as reports on village events. There are a couple of regular contributors, to whom I am most grateful, but this edition is rather thin! It is a solemn. Dark day for Christians in the recognition that Jesus came to this earth and to the cross for all the sin we have committed. The biggest sin being that of forgetting God, his world and his people. As human beings we do so love to go our own selfish way and not God’s way. The Joy of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus is all the more wonderful knowing we have a Saviour who will forgive us our sin, especially when we confess and turn back to him. I look forward to your return to Church this Easter! Every Blessing, Jane. 2 Clawton Parish Council News The next meeting of the Parish Council and AGM will be held on Monday 13th May 2019 in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to attend. Please send any matters for the attention to the Parish Council to the parish clerk, Sally Whitehead via [email protected] Minutes and Agenda are available on our village web site: www.clawton.org.uk Women on Wednesday The next meeting is on Wednesday 3rd April 2019 at 5.00 p.m. and is the Spring Outing for members to Farms for City Children for a talk and tour of the establishment. This will be followed by supper at the Duke of York pub in Iddesleigh. Members should meet at 3.55pm at Clawton Parish Hall to arrange car sharing. Holsworthy Ales Brewery Open Nights 2019 Our open nights for 2019 will be held on the last Saturday of the month from April until October. Starting at the slightly earlier time of 6pm, and running until 9.30pm, we'll have at least 6 draught ales on offer, plus bottled beer, cider, wine and soft drinks. Hope you can join us at one or more evenings! As usual, no need to book. We're changing our opening times slightly, and will open on Saturdays from 3.30pm - 6.30pm this year. Hopefully this will not cause too much confusion!! 3 Inter Parish Walk -report from Evelyn On Monday 11th March, thirty four of us met by the Parish Church in Halwill. It was lovely to see familiar faces & several new ones from Clawton, Ashwater, Woodacott & even Okehampton. It just goes to show how invaluable our Parish magazines are in spreading the word about community events. Bearing in mind how wild the weather had been over the weekend & that storm Gareth was due to arrive on Monday night, we were incredibly fortunate to have sunshine & just a breath of wind. It was accurately described as "the lull before the storm"! Mike Stone, a resident of Halwill, kindly led the walk. We set off down the hill keeping the Church on our right. At the bottom of the hill we admired the newly refurbished "Horsebridge". I'm afraid that these beautiful features of our countryside were never originally constructed with the size of today's modern vehicles in mind. We forked left at Horsebridge Cross which took us up a hill to the footpath sign. We followed the footpath downhill, through a little gate, down some wooden steps & through the stream. It was quite a challenging section but there were several pairs of helping hands to assist. It was definitely a case of "what goes down, must go up" (?!) & it was quite a steep climb across a grassy field to join the lane. We were thankful for the large gate at the field entrance. We took the opportunity to lean on it & admire the view/catch our breath. From there it was a nice stroll down the lane & across the River Carey at Halwill Mill before going up the hill towards the Church where our cars were parked. I will take this opportunity to thank Mike & Cath Stone especially as they were so very kind & provided transport to the Medical Centre in Holsworthy when one of the walkers became quite unwell. Everyone was very concerned & supportive. I am very pleased to report that the person in question was seen promptly by medical staff & was able to return home soon thereafter feeling very much better. The incident certainly reinforced the value of taking a mobile phone especially when walking/cycling/riding etc. Our next walk will be on Monday 8th April. We will meet in the Village Hall car park in Pyworthy with a view to setting off at 10am. If you would like any more information, you are welcome to contact me. ALL WELCOME (Any profits will go towards the Hall funds) 5 CHURCHYARD MAINTENANCE Sadly Andy Knight (who has been doing a brilliant job of keeping the churchyard neat and tidy) is unable to do it this year. Rather than ask for quotes from contractors we would like to explore other options. These could be volunteers using their own equipment, volunteers using equipment we buy or someone (maybe retired) doing it for less than a commercial rate etc. It’s a fairly big churchyard and jobs include cutting grass, strimming round graves and path edges and periodically trimming hedges and bushes.
