EDWARD'S UNIVERSITY LINDEN CHILES MARY MOODY NORTHEN THEATRE Truman Linden Chiles was born in St. Louis and spent his early years in Barrington, Illinois, a suburb of presents Chicago. He says, "My folks were born and raised on farms but left to go on to college and become teachers. Growing up in a small town was nice enough I guess, but BEYOND TH ·E HORIZON my favorite place was my Grandpa's farm in southern Il linois. I spent most of my summers and vacations there. I liked it 'cause there was always plenty to do and lots of by Eugene O'Neill uncles and aunts and cousins AND my parents left me alone." Guest Star Mr. Chiles attended Purdue University to study engineering but soon fell in love with the theater and l LINDEN CHILES transferred to North Western where he graduated in jour nalism. He has this to say: 1 "My Dad was just deadset against my becoming an actor so I took a major in journalism and worked in the adver SCENIC DESIGNER tising business in Chicago. Finally back in Chicago after a stint in the Army, I realized GARY VAN DER WEGE the ad business was not for me. My wife and I moved to Los Angeles so I could go to graduate school at UCLA. But then one of my teachers, who was a film director, saw me do a scene in class and COSTUME DESIGNER he got me my first job in the old RAWHIDE series." Mr. Chiles pursued the career for 6 or 7 years, was under contract to Universal Studios, SUSAN LOUGHRAN did several films and a slew of TV shows including 2 series-and then burned out. He states:" And I dropped out. In 1967 or so, I left the business and I went to live in a com mune in the Santa Cruz mountains, where I meditated every day and focused on my LIGHTING DESIGNER spiritual interests. Of course it finally came to an end and I came down off the mountain. MICHAEL MASSEY I remarried and moved to New York to do a soap opera. But it was never the same; the business had lost it's lure. And now I've developed a real antipathy for it. Fortunately I love the work (acting) and that has saved me."
