In Remembrance July 29, 2019 As mentioned in last month’s @theBradbury, museums exist to tell stories, to serve as guideposts and to provide space for introspection as well as exploration. The Bradbury Science Museum is no different in those respects from any other museum. Where we do differ, rather significantly, is in our origin story and unique mission. In 1954, the Bradbury Science Museum opened as the official museum of Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Lab that began as Project Y of the Manhattan Project and created Fat Man and Little Boy, the weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Today, the Museum’s unique mission includes providing the public a window into the Lab’s history and highlighting a longstanding tradition of exceptional scientific research, much of which stems from that original mission of the Manhattan Project. In keeping with our roles as Lab storyteller and venue for public introspection, the Bradbury invites you to experience the Lab’s mission, then and now, along with our Public Forum Wall and comment book on August 6 and 9 in observance of the 74th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 1 Our Public Forum Wall and comment book honor the nation’s First Amendment and acknowledge the differing opinions related to Project Y’s mission and the use of atomic weapons.
