PERTHSHIRE SOCIETY OF NATURAL SCIMCE ORNITHOLOGICAL SECTION BULLETIN Noc 1. APRIL 1963. INTRODUCTIONo 1. On Friday9 15th March 1963? after a locturc on "Ornithology" given to tho parent Society by Mr. Kenneth Wood, MA, the idea was put forward that an Ornithological Section of the PSNS should be formed. This was well received and as a result of that evening and a notice in the "Perthshire Advertiser" a meeting was held in the Art Gallery and Museum on 3rd April 5 attended by about 25 interested people. An interim committee of five was voted in at that meetingj and was charged with making plans for the formation and future of the Section. 2. The interim committee met on Wednesday 17th April and its proposals and recommendations are outlined m the remainder of this Bulletin. INTERIM COMMITTEE MEETING. 3. The Chair was taken by Major A.M. Macfarlane, RA who welcomed the members of the interim committee. 4. It was proposed that the Section Committee should consist at first of the followings- Chairman, Hon, Secretary-cum-Recorder, Hon. Treasurer and two Members. Several names for these offices were put forward but as the final decision must be left to a full Section meeting, it was decided to ask members to be prepared to vote for a Committee at the next Indoor Meeting. Indoor Meeting 5. It ¥\ras decided that the next Indoor Meeting should bo at the Art Gallery and Museum on Wednesday 1st May 1963 ^ 7.30 p.m. The objects of this meeting would bes- a. to vote for a Section Committee. b. to discuss the proposals of the interim committee. c. to plan future activities of the Section, including lectures. Outdoor Meetings. 6. It was decided to plan three outdoor meetings for the summer 1963j as followss- a. Saturday, 25th May. Tentsmuir and Morter Lochs, for eider and other duck, terns and gulls. Depart Museum 11 a.m. Picnic lunches. b. Sunday, 23rd June. Fowlsheugh, Stonehaven, for shags, auks,, fulmers and gulls. Depart Museum 10.30 a.m. Picnic lunches., and teas. c. Sunday, 14th July. Loch Garten and Rothiemurchus, for osprey, crossbill crested tit etc. Depart Museum 10 a.m. Picnic lunches, and teas. 7. Transport. All members with cars who are prepared to offer lifts for these outings should bring their cars to the Museum 15 minutes before departure. Lifts will then be arranged. It is suggested that passengers should pay their driver a small sum to defray expenses, say -Jd per mile. 8./ ...2/ - 2 - 8. Other possible outdoor meetings were discussed but nothing was decided. These were s — Guardbridge, Eden Estuary and St» Andrews - autumn Isle of May - autumn Kilconquhar Loch - autumn Loch Leven - early winter Ifugdrum Island and Lindores Loch - early winter Carsebreck - winter It was suggested that members might like to consider these possibilities and offer dates at the next meeting. Subscriptions. 9. It was proposed that a small subscription to the Sections m addition to that payable to the parent Society, should be levied^ to cover cost of postage etc- Howevers it was agreed that expenses should be cut to a minimum and such a subscription might be no more than 3/- per annum. This to bo decided at the next meeting. Log Book. 10. Major Macfarlane showed the interim committee a Log Book he had had prepared for the Section. This is now held permanently m the Library of the Art Gallery and Museum5 Perth. It is available whenever the Museum is open. The ob3ect of this Log Book is to record in very brief form members' more interesting observations as soon after they are made as possible. There are some instructions on the inside front cover, and several examples already entered. All members are urged to make use of this Log Book for the information and interest of other members. Bulletin. 10. It was decided that a Bulletin should be produced at regular intervals; giving information to members as follows:- a. Details of the next meeting. b. Details of future plans. c. Recent interesting bird reports. d. Requests for information. 12. Members are requested to inform Major Macfarlane (Office 'phone no: PERTH 21281 Ext. 59) of any interesting bird reports or any other items for inclusion in the Bulletins. 13« It is proposed to distribute the Bulletin to members at meetings, in order to save postage. It will be posted to members who cannot attend a meeting. Annual Report. 14. It was decided to postpone any discussion on an Annual Report until later m the yearj to see whether our efforts justified it. In any case5 it was agreed'that it would have to be a duplicated edition. Members' Address List. 15. It was agreed that an address list of members5 giving telephone numbers and details of car ownership or access should be distributed. A copy is attached with this Bulletin. 16= Remember. PERTHSHIRE SOCIBTY FOR NATURAL SCIEITCE ORNITHOLOGICAL SBCTICM. 1. An Ornithological Section of the PSNS was formed early in April, 1963s and now has about 30 members. Its aims are:- a. To promote the study of bird-life locally b. To instruct and encourage beginners in the art of bird-watching c. To assist in any way the various nation-wide projects of bird-study and bird-protection. 2. The Section hopes to achieve its aims by holding regular meetings, both outdoor during the better weather and indoor during the winter months. The following outdoor meetings are already planned",- a. A number of indoor meetings, beginning m September, will be arranged, once a month, when guest speakers will be asked to come, and bring slides or films. This programme will be published when it is complete. 4. It has been suggested that certain schools might be interested in joining the Ornithological Section as Corporate Members. To encourage the younger bird-v/atcher to come along and attend the meetings the Section Committee has agreed that for a nominal fee of £.l?-s- any school that so wishes could join the Section and allow as many of its pupils as cared to attend any meeting of the Section to do so without further individual payment. 5. (3) Sunday, 8th September leslo of May (limited to 12) or Lmdores and Kilconquhar Lochs, depending on the weather, for migrants. Depart Museum 10 a.m. Picnic lunches and teas, (4) Sunday, 24th November Dunkeld - Blairgowrie Lochs, for wildfowl. Depart Museum 10 a.m. Picnic lunches. Indoor Meetings. 4. It was agreed that a committee meeting should be held in the Museum at 6 p.m., Thursday 16th May, to agree a winter programme for lectures, films etc. Members wero asked to suggest possible speakers to tho committee before this meeting. Finance./ ...2/ - 2 - Finance. 5. Subscriptions. It was agreed that the subscription to the Section should bei 5/-cl per annunij although any student taking a full-time course of education should pay a Junior subscription of 2/6d per annum. 6. transport.' It was agreed that passengers in private cars (other than relations and personal guests of the driver) should pay certain "foes" to the Hon. Treasurer, as under, for repayment to drivers a. Trips of 30 miles and over s 2/6d each passenger. b. Trips of under 30 miles % l/-d each passenger. FIELD NOTES 7. Several summer migrants have arrived m and around the county at the normal time 9 despite the long;, hard winter. Swallows seen and a Cuckoo heard at New'/urgh about 27th April. A female Redstart, several Swallows and two hen Whoatears between Crieff and Amulree on 1st May. Two Common Sandpipers in the Sma1 Glen on 4th May and several Willow Warblers singing near Dunkeld on the same day< 8.
