To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Duke, which ended the 2006 season with an 18-4-1 record, their best since 1999, led all schools with a record-high eight honorees on this season’s academic team. The 2005 national champion Maryland Terrapins had five selections, while Virginia Tech and Clemson notched four student-athletes each on the squad. All-Tournament MVP Michael Videira of Duke highlights this year’s All-ACC Academic team as the center midfielder from Milton, Mass., was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, the National Player of the Year award, and placed on the 2006 All-ACC first team. Videira was placed on the 2006 College Soccer News All-America First Team, Soccer America’s 2006 College Men’s Most Valuable Players list, and both College Soccer News’ and Top Drawer Soccer’s National Teams of the Year. Videira was also named to the Academic All-America third team and the 2006 NCAA Division I Men’s NSCAA/adidas All-America third team, which made him only the third player in Duke men’s soccer history to be named Academic All-America and All-America in the same season. Joining Videira on the All-ACC Academic team is Maryland’s Maurice Edu, who earned All-ACC first team recognition, and classmate Stephen King, who tabbed second team nods. The Terrapins' midfield duo were also honored with the 2006 Peter Lowery Award, presented to the Maryland team members who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and distinguished citizenship on campus. Edu, who was drafted No. 1 overall by Toronto FC in the MLS SuperDraft, also earned the 2006 John Carlson Award presented to the Terrapin’s Most Outstanding Team Member, while King, who notched six goals and seven assists this past season, was named the Terps’ 2006 Offensive Most Valuable Player. The All-ACC Academic team boasts a youthful mix, including five All-ACC Freshmen Team selections in Charlie Campbell (Virginia Tech), Bill Dworsky (North Carolina), Omar Gonzalez (Maryland), Jason Herrick (Maryland), and Zack Schilawski (Wake Forest). In addition, a total of 11 student-athletes receive the honor for the second year in a row. 2006 All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team Name, Class, Position, School Major Name, Class, Position, School Major Jamen Amato, Sr., MF, Boston College* History Omar Gonzalez, Fr., D/F, Maryland Undeclared Stephen Hepburn, So., MF, Boston College Finance Jason Herrick, Fr., F, Maryland Undeclared Mark Buchholz, Jr., MF, Clemson* Management Drew Yates, Fr., MF/F, Maryland History David Bell, Jr., F, Clemson Comp.
