First edition. 250 pp. Plus 72 lithographed plates, 27 of them in color, 3 of them folding, 2 folding maps. A near fine copy, with very slight browning, a few short tears to maps. Nicely bound in gilt pebbled faux leather. The maps are: "Reconnaissances of Routes from San Antonio de Bexar to El Paso del Norte..." and "Map of the Route Pursued in 1849 by the U.S. Troops under the Command of Bvt. Lieut. Col. Jno. M. Washington, Governor of New Mexico, in an Expedition against the Navajos Indians...." Lt. Simpson's report is one of the earliest detailed accounts of New Mexico. The plates are by Edward and Richard Kern, with many of Pueblo and Navajo leaders, and ceremonies. Plus some of the earliest images of preHispanic ruins at Chaco Canyon. And valuable detailed images of the early Spanish explorers' inscriptions at Inscription Rock, now El Morro National Monument. The plates are numbered 1-75, but plate numbers 2, 21, and 39 were not issued.
