This promises to be an intellectually stimulating, socially exciting meeting—the largest the MSS or NCSA ever sponsored! In our theme, Communities in an Age of Social Transformation, we used the word commu- nities because we believe it essential for sociology to come to terms with the myriad ways and reasons that people bind themselves to others. At the same time, a person would be hard-pressed to find any topic of interest to sociologists that cannot be linked to the idea of community. In our original thematic statement, we noted that framing sociological topics in terms of community raises a fundamental sociological question: What are the bases of social solidarity? This question, in turn, engenders another: How is society possible? We hope you will find the varied ways that sociologists respond to these questions embedded throughout the meetings.
