The School Colours communities designated for the regular program are Banff Trail, Capitol Hill (west Orange and White of 14 Street), Charleswood (east of Charleswood Drive) and Collingwood (west of 14 Street). William Aberhart High School is the designated French Immersion High School for Calgary’s northwest communities. Junior high feeder schools for the French Immersion program are Branton, Valley Creek, and Georges P. Vanier. William Aberhart is also the designated Spanish Bilingual high school for the north side of the city. Registering at William Aberhart Programming recommendations are based on the student’s past and current achievement, capabilities, interests, goals and teacher recommendations. Students are advised to carefully select courses, as course scheduling and staffing are based on student requests. Every effort is made to provide appropriate interventions and supports in order for students to achieve academic success. Students planning a cultural exchange or travel program during their high school years are advised to plan their program in consultation with their counsellor at William Aberhart. Grade 11 is the recommended year to participate in an exchange program. The Calgary Board of Education offers a common guide for all high schools called “Your Introduction to High School.” This registration guide includes information about high school completion and diploma requirements and can be found on the high school page of the CBE website. The decision to continue in French Immersion should be based on student achievement, effort, commitment and willingness to continue in the program. Students enrolled in the French Immersion Program must show commitment to their French Immersion studies by speaking French at all times in all classes where French is the language of instruction. Students enrolled in the French Immersion Program must complete the current school year in French Immersion before requesting a program transfer. Students who wish to withdraw from the program will be asked to engage in a diagnostic process so they can make an informed decision. If a student withdraws from the program, he/she may be directed to the regular program at their designated school for the following school year. (See the Detailed High School Course Guide) Required French Immersion courses: n French Language Arts 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 or 30-2 n Social Studies 10-1, 20-1 or 20-2, 30-1 or 30-2 n Mathematics 10C, 20-1 or 20-2, 30-1 or 30-2 Spanish Bilingual Program Registration Students enrolled in the Spanish Bilingual Program must show commitment to their studies by speaking Spanish at all times in all classes where Spanish is the language of instruction. Registration for the Spanish Bilingual Program consists of 15 credits in Spanish Language Arts, 5 credits in Mathematics 10C Sp and one 5 credit option. The majority of students complete all requirements of the Spanish Bilingual Program High School Certificate within three years. Students enrolled in Spanish Bilingual must complete the current school year before requesting a program transfer. Students who wish to withdraw from the program will be asked to engage in a diagnostic process so they can make an informed decision. A student who withdraws from the program may be directed to his/her regular program at their designated high school for the next school year. It is intended for students who have demonstrated strength and interest in a particular subject. Junior high students intending to pursue Pre-AP courses at Aberhart should fill out Advanced Placement (AP) Program Registration and Expression of Intent form: www.cbe.ab.ca/FormsManuals/Advanced-Placement-Registration-Information-and- Expression-of-Intent.pdf The Pre-AP stream of courses will prepare students for the rigour of AP exam expectations which will be written in May of their final AP course. AP course availability may vary from year to year. AP classes are optional and therefore not required for completion of the Alberta Education High School diploma. Students writing the AP exams are expected to pay AP exam fees. Schools are not funded to cover the cost of AP exams. Learning Commons Our new and improved Learning Commons is the physical and virtual learning hub of the school. It houses three computer labs, a collaborative working area for students and a reading lounge designed to promote literacy. Student Services Guidance counsellors offer a variety of services including assistance with: n Educational/Career Counselling n Post-Secondary Planning n Personal/Social Counselling n Strategies for test anxiety Student Success Centre The Student Success Centre is open during school hours for students on an Individual Program Plan (IPP) who want a quiet environment to work, study and write a test. We have computers for student use, several large tables for individual or group work, and a separate extra-quiet exam room. 3 | We have two Learning Strategists acting as a liaison between students, parents, teachers, and guidance counsellors to ensure students receive all the necessary support and accommodations. All students with specific needs have access to the tools and materials they need to support their learning. n Creating a learning profile on Iris n Learning assessments n Individual program plans on Iris n Assistive technology and learning resources n One-on-one or group support with a Learning Strategist n Quiet learning space to work, study, or write a test when it is possible n Accommodations & supports for students with learning needs and/or attention challenges n Help with: self-advocacy, attention and concentration in the learning process/ strategies, memory skills, organizing skills, time management skills, reading skills, writing skills, test preparation and study skills n Support with transition from grade 12 to post-secondary opportunities for students with IPP William Aberhart High School | 4 Second Languages French as a Second Language Students in the Regular or Spanish Bilingual Program may wish to choose French as a Second Language as one of their complementary courses. French 10 (5 credits) The intent of this beginning French course is to develop the following skills, understandings and attitudes in students: as a desire and interest to learn French for personal benefit and as a life-long learning about people and culture; an awareness that the French language is used in other parts of the province, country and world as a medium for learning and communicating consequently respecting cultural linguistic diversity; an awareness of the skills and strategies required for intercultural communication; an awareness that through technology, students can access many different Francophone cultures; a growing ability to direct one’s own learning by reflecting on one’s progress and autonomously selecting appropriate learning strategy; an expansion of students’ knowledge and awareness of experiences and perceptions of other people beyond their immediate experience. French 20-3Y (5 credits) This course is a continuation of French 10 and is designed for students who have already developed the vocabulary and grammar basics of the beginner level. The goal of the course is the progressive development of effective oral and written comprehension and communication skills. Learning is achieved in a collaborative, supportive, positive environment where every student’s participation is fundamental to the process. A variety of resources will be used in the classroom including literature, textbooks, audio-visual materials and online technologies. Spanish Language and Culture Students in the Regular or French Immersion Program may wish to choose Spanish as one of their complementary courses. Spanish 10 (5 credits) Spanish 10 is a beginner’s course designed to equip students with a practical knowledge of Spanish using a theme-based approach. It allows students the opportunity to use basic language structures in simulations of everyday conversations. No previous Spanish is required.
