Member Newsletter April 2021 | No. 565 Concord Yacht Club LUFF LETTER Latitude: 35º50’55.27”N Longitude: 84º09’4.809”W “Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit.” -Brooks Atkinson www.concordyachtclub.org Commodore’s | Report At the anniversary of the beginning of COVID’s dramatic impact on our lives, the first thing that comes to mind is it has been a long year full of challenges and stress. Thankfully, the grip of the virus is easing and slowly things are moving closer to the type of normal life we had before. As a result of the last year of precautions, not only have we not been able to gather and enjoy our time together, our Club’s grounds and facilities have not had significant attention since late 2019. Numerous things require maintenance along with some repair and replacement. Although a few projects are a sig- nificant undertaking, most are smaller jobs that do not require a lot of time and can be accomplished by one to four people. I urge everyone to find ways to contribute to helping catch up around our Club in- cluding taking on a Project Manager role for the more involved projects. Board Meeting The March Board Meeting items of note: • The COVID Benchmarks in Knox County continue to improve and are either Yellow or Green. The Board is continuing to monitor the situation and is looking for Knox County to review their protocols and continue to slowly ease restrictions. • The Board approved the CSC COVID mitigation plan for a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Class. Now scheduled for May 1-2, 2021. • The annual work hour requirements remain at 12 hours. The Board will reassess later in the year for any possible additional adjustment. • The Rear Commodore, Gregory Payne, has begun soliciting members for tasks to be completed around the club. Look for opportunities to help get the club cleaned up and fulfilling your work hours. • The water to the docks should be turned on around the first week of April. • The Board is supporting CSC efforts to hold Sail Camp this summer. Among the request is adding an additional swim dock ladder. • The replacement 420 Dock and the addition OPTI dock should be completed in time for Sail Camp. • Ship 300 plans to resume meeting March 25 and are planning to be on the water as soon as March 29. • We are planning a July 4th party at the club. More details when available. • We are reviewing Race Committee administration and trying to resume racing before the summer dead period descend upon us. Look for a possible Memorial Day Regatta as the likely kickoff. • CYC’s financials continues to be stable. • CYC’s membership continues to be stable. • Knox County is in the process of hiring a permanent Senior Director of Parks and Rec. That position should be filled by early June. Until the Senior Director is in place, no progress can happen on our request for a new lease. Monthly Meetings If a member would like to attend a monthly Board Meeting while we are meeting virtual, please let me know and I can provide you the Zoom Link. The next meeting is April 13, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Dana Dawson CYC Commodore Rear Commodore’s | Report Hope everyone is doing well and is excited that Spring arrives this Saturday. It’s time to come and get in on the action. Sail Camp has two vacancies for paid non-instructor positions in June. We need a Shore Director and a COVID Monitor. The Shore Director handles the shore activities for campers as well as maintaining all of the camper paperwork (sign-in/out, medical forms, late payments, etc.). The COVID Monitor handles the safety procedures for staff and campers, including taking tempera- tures, maintaining sterile conditions, and distributing water, snacks and lunches. Both positions work closely with the senior instructor staff to produce a fun and learning experience for our young campers. Instructor qualifications are not required. Camp dates are June 7-July 2, Monday-Friday, 0830-1700h, plus some additional time for prep and orientation. Lunches are included. If you are interested in either of these positions, or know someone who would be a good match, please contact the Camp Director (Jeff Gamey, [email protected]) for further information.
