People in Rural Bangladesh Need Water

People In Rural Bangladesh Need Safe Water Country: Bangladesh Region: Dhaka Number of beneficiaries: 5,550 Total Project Cost: $60,000 A woman using pond water for household purposes in KaKaliakair Upazila, Bangladesh. Current Water Situation Over the last four years, WaterPartners has partnered with the Village Education Resource Centre in Bangladesh to build new water points and latrines and mobilize and train commu- nity members to manage their new services. For two years, WaterPartners has funded VERC’s initiative to increase access to safe water and improved sanitation among rural households in northern Bangladesh. Over 6,000 people in this impoverished and difficult- to-serve area have gained access to new water points, community or household latrines, and/or hygiene education from the initiative. WaterPartners and VERC would like to build on this success by extending the program to nearby villages within the district. The location of the project to be implemented is three Unions of Kaliakair Upazila situated in Gazipur district under the Dhaka division of Bangladesh—Atabaha, Dhaljora and Sree- faltali. Approximately 56,365 households with 267,003 people inhabit the area. People are mostly poor even by Bangladeshi standards – household income is below the national av- erage of $150/month. High prevalence of water-borne disease causes vulnerability to fre- quent ailments year-round. This three-year project will benefit 5,550 people by providing: • 45 new water points. • Repairs or re-construction of 111 existing water points. • Sanitary facilities at key locations. • Community-organizing and hygiene education. A procession of children in Kandapur village recite a chant they learned from VERC about the importance of safe water and sanitation. .
