ALL SAINTS SUNDAY A Celebration of Life in the Presence of Death Almighty God, who hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses: Grant that we, encouraged by the good example of thy servants, may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at length, through thy mercy, we may with them attain to thine eternal joy; through Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Requiem Eucharist November 1, 2020—11:15 a.m. All Saints Church, Pasadena 2 NOTE: This liturgy is intended for personal worship purposes only and not for distribution. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY November 1, 2020 11:15 REQUIEM EUCHARIST It has been the custom in the Western Church to celebrate All Saints Day on November 1, remembering the lives of all Christians who have died. At our parish celebration of this festival, we remember by name all those close to the life of this parish who have died since last All Saints Day. The traditional way of remembering the dead has been through the requiem, a mass for the dead. The music of today’s Requiem for the Living is by Dan Forrest (b. 1978). It is offered by Coventry Choir, with soloists Kyla McCarrel, soprano, Kimberly Poli, mezzo-soprano, Daniel Ramon, tenor and Jim Campbell, baritone, accompanied by chamber orchestra and organ played by Grace Chung. Weicheng Zhao conducts. Requiem for the Living projects a wide range of meaningful expression, from a biting essay on the vanity and pain of humamankind to a plea for mercy, and finally a celebration of eternal light. The opening movement pleads for rest and mercy. The second movement sets scriptural texts that speak of the turmoil and sorrow which face humanity. The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the “heavens and earth, full of Thy glory” including an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station, and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The Agnus Dei is a plea for deliverance and peace. The Lux Aeterna which then closes the work portrays light, peace, and rest — for both the deceased and the living. On this All Saints Sunday you may have additional emotional and spiritual care needs as we mourn and celebrate the lives of loved ones we have lost. Please remember that trained lay counselors are available through the Lay Counseling Ministry at 626.583.2706. We honor the roots of our liturgical history by using the traditional language of Rite One from The Book of Common Prayer. The smoke from the incense is a symbol of prayer and the mystery of life and death. 3 PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME VIDEO MEDITATION Len DeVane (reader); Jason Luckett (music); Alison Pill (video) Now we will praise our great heroes, the ancestors of our people from times long past. Our God gave them greatness and honor, they too reflected the greatness of God in ancient times. Some of them had power over great domains and gained their fame through their strength. Others were advisors who possessed great foresight and spoke with the power of prophets. Some led the people through their wisdom, and by their knowledge of the Law of Israel, teaching the people from their wealth of understanding. Some composed great music, others wrote great poetry. Still others possessed great wealth and power, living a life of ease in their estates. All of these were known for great honor and those among them took great pride in them. Some left behind them renown, and their stories are told to this day. Others are forgotten; passed away, as though they had never existed, as if they had never been born — and their children after them did the same. But it was different with our ancestors who were true to their faith; their virtuous deeds will be remembered forever. Their progeny will last for all time and respect for their names will never die. Their bodies are at peace but their names will continue forever. —Ecclesiasticus 44:1–10, 13–14 SALUTATION Mike Kinman Minister: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! Minister: Let us pray. Silence is kept. Minister and People: Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of thy Son, Christ our Lord: Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys which thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. SEQUENCE Sung by Coventry Choir. Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas! Vanity of vanities, all is vanity! Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Lacrimosa, et locutus est, pereat dies in qua natus sum. Full of tears, they said, let the day perish wherein I was born. GOSPEL Susan Russell Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Matthew (5:1–12). People: Glory is yours, O Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, the disciples came to him. Then Jesus began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kindom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kindom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Minister: The Gospel of the Savior. People: Praise to you, O Christ. 5 PROCESSION HYMN “For All the Saints” —Words: William Walsham How (1823–1897) Music: Sine Nomine, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) SERMON Mike Kinman A period of silence is observed after the sermon. 6 Names of those for whom we continue to pray are listed on page 16 & 17.
