From its humble beginnings in 1906, the Derwent Sailing Squadron, more commonly known as the DSS, has grown to W become one of Tasmania’s premier yacht clubs, with a 1000- stong membership base, many of whom berth their boats in the Club’s marina. Situated in a magical spot on the banks of Hobart’s River Derwent, next to Wrest Point Casino and opposite the University of Tasmania, the Club’s location is really second to none. E The DSS is best known for its sailing program, which features internationally renowned events such as the Pipeopener Series, Melbourne to Hobart, Launceston to Hobart and King L of the Derwent, as well as a full schedule of summer and winter racing for keelboats and dinghies. C It is also home to a growing contingent of cruising enthusiasts, who delight in being able to explore the hundreds of nautical miles of surrounding sheltered waterways. The Club makes an ideal starting point from which to explore popular locations along the River Derwent, D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Frederick O Henry Bay, Wedge Bay and Safety Cove, all of which are within a day’s leisurely cruising of the Club’s marina. For experienced sailors, the world-renowned natural wilderness of Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour – which lie within the Port M Davey Marine Reserve and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area – provides an unforgettable destination for an extended cruise. Boating activity on the Derwent, along with that on all waters in Tasmania not covered by Commonwealth legislation is managed by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST). CRUISING & ANCHORAGE The String of Pearls is a series of strategically placed mooring facilities at key locations within sheltered waters around Hobart. The aim is to create a cruising experience in southern Tasmania which provides Derwent Sailing Squadron members and visiting sailors with a full itinerary of destinations. Moorings are spread across the cruising waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Norfolk Bay, Frederick Henry Bay, Bruny Island, Storm Bay and the River Derwent. Mooring locations are located close to onshore tourist attractions, allowing sailors to explore the many treasures of this extraordinary region: the beaches, walking tracks, restaurants, cafes, cheeseries, smokehouses, orchards, vineyards, cideries, museums and so much more. OUT & ABOUT The Squadron is located in the Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay within walking distance of the shopping precinct and on a major bus route to the city.
